Some interesting ideas...

but I really didn't like the misdirection at the beginning with the bike.

Major spoilers below ***************

So the two children that managed to escape from the abductor however many years ago just agreed it would be better to not talk to police and make up a nonsensical story about a magical house in the trees. This made it sound like they're suffering from PTSD related fantasies to throw the police off from asking questions in order to wait x number of years for one of them who is arguably less screwed up to come back for vengeance. They were able to think this far ahead. Riiiight. And the other one that supposedly scarred up his own face, wtf was that about? Not to mention his reaction when his abductor came to visit him in an official police capacity. No one found that odd? The abductor's police partner, the parents? I appreciate there will be some type of link to the guy due to the traumatic events of his childhood, but come on.

As far as I understood the blond kid that phrogged the house was abducted by the kidnapper many years ago? That's what the ending implied or at least I understood it that way. So you are saying he knew where the kidnapper lived and deliberately phrogged his house?

reply

Yeah. The guy that phrogged the house was abducted with his friend and escaped years ago. I've forgotten some of what happened tbh. I just found it a little bit of a stretch for a couple of children to concoct such a future revenge plan. That's all.

reply

I agree with most of RogueDemonHunter's complaints, but I don't think Alec realized whose house he was phrogging until he saw the photos on the staircase wall.

reply

UPDATE. Wikipedia says Alec picked the house because he knew it was the auductor's. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_See_You_(2019_film)

reply

Has it been changed or am I just not seeing it?

reply

absolutely knew.

Tommy says it's a "little house in the trees, it's not there anymore, it's a magic house, it disappears" because he's referring to the old trailer Greg uses to keep the abducted kids. It's "in the trees" because it's surrounded by them and it's not there anymore and disappears because it's mobile. Greg can move the trailer anywhere he wants. I don't think he's willingly keeping information from the police, it's just the mind from a kid who as suffered a traumatic experience.

Regarding Alec, Mindy states that that she let him pick out that house.

Great point....completely missed that train of thought.....that's why I always come here after watching a show - to see what I may have missed...

reply

Thank you, and I agree-- that was just the child's explanation of the motorhome/camper thing.

Spoilers below.

The bike wasn't really a misdirection. It was a clue that fit with the plot but didn't become apparent until later. The first hint we have is the wire that detective Spitzky found tied to a tree at the crime scene. The abductor ran a wire across the bike path, which knocked the kid off his bike. Neither we nor the kid see the wire.

reply

My issue with the bike and my claim of misdirection is that noway would a simple wire trap create that sort of movement. It implied some sort of supernatural force imo.

reply

The bike appeared to be traveling at 35 mph or faster. I disagree that being suddenly knocked off the bike at that speed wouldn't cause the rider to fly up and back as shown in the film, especially when the impact occurs at chest level and the bike has no impact. The kid's body seemed to move faster than it did because the bike kept moving forward. Think about how much damage can be done to an auto that crashes at that speed. Certainly the filmmakers wanted you to think something supernatural occurred (especially in slow motion), as they did with many other events in the film. The beauty of this film is that everything that occurred was a result of natural phenomena, which becomes apparent after we get to about halfway through the film. We can call that misdirection, but it's not unusual in good films with plot twists.

reply

LOL did you ever ride a bike in your life? 35mph? I would say 20 is already a stretch on this kind of bike, normal cruising speed is more around 15mph, everything else would cause visible exercise. And no, with the speed you can reach on that bike, you are far away from reaching what we saw in the movie.

I watched this for the first time last night, and then I watched it again tonight to better understand certain parts.

The kids that were kidnapped and escaped 16 years ago didn't concoct any sort of "future revenge plan."
And they didn't dodge the police or make up some story. As Devotee said, the "magical treehouse" that disappears is just the child's recollection of the camper trailer thing that the guy kept them in. And Detective Rizner(?) said that he interviewed the kids extensively back then.
Upon first watch: When they go talk to grown-up Tommy and he looks at them and starts screaming "no" uncontrollably, I assumed it was because he saw Detective Rizner(?) and all of those horrible memories came flooding back. (I assume that that's what the parents and Det. Rizner thought, too.)
Upon second watch, knowing who the Bad Guy is: The camera pans to Det. BadGuy, and you can see him look kind of worried for a second, like Shit, am I busted?, but then his look seems to relax a little bit, like, Okay, I'm safe, he's just mental.

As far as Tommy scarring up his face, I assume that that's there to show the depths of his psychological scars from the ordeal (mentally/emotionally). Which is why him screaming "no" uncontrollably (and that it didn't surprise the parents) is understandable.

Anyway, I'm not positive here, but I'm assuming that Alec must've somewhat recently found out where the real Bad Guy lived, and that's why he chose that house to "phrog" with Mindy (and why he asked to come along on one of her "phrogging" missions in the first place).

However, as someone else pointed out in a different thread, Alec presumably would've known that the cops got the wrong guy 16 years ago. So that part doesn't make sense to me...

It was more down to earth than just a story about a magical house (that could never be found). I mean they were kids, they could be brainwashed by the abductor to believe it. This was early in the movie, and after the narration about a magical house, the scene cuts to Helen Hunt's home, which is a misdirection. Because we were lead to believe it was a ghost movie in the outside, and now we think the magical house, is a haunted house. Anyway, reason why I say it was more down to earth is because they were actually taken in to questioned, and they even pinpointed the wrong guy, they put someone in jail that didn't do the crimes, remember? Why? So I think they were threatened by the real killer, Helen Hunt's husband the detective, to keep their mouths shut, pin it on the wrong guy. Kids grew up, knowing all these years who the real killer is, and where he lived.

I dunno. LOL!

reply

Rest easy. I just saw it and you got the major points properly.
