I was half-expecting something like that, too. At first, I thought maybe that first bit of flotsam was alive, or had been. I also thought maybe some civilization would be revealed on that Earth-like planet in Lyra. Maybe even a colony originally from Earth that had conquered super-light travel and beat them there, maybe hearing of this ship in their legends. I guess they left all that to our imaginations. PS It was 5.9 million years. ...and don't forget, the rescue ship has to have enough fuel and supplies to itself return to its origin. I say "no." I would figure, with my luck, that 10 minutes after I killed my kid and myself, a solution would appear. The old "Get Smart" "Missed it by that much!" But Isagel was somewhat depressive to begin with... Remember, repressing her feelings? Excuse me? I'm a male lesbian and would never use that. Good answers. Thanks. I have my own DVD of Lolly. I think it's a bit longer than the theatrical version, but can't put my finger on what they included. Maybe a couple of scenes deemed too rough for the theater. See if you agree it's a metaphor for Vietnam... maybe for all wars. Yes, I feel I understood it, but I stopped caring about 10 minutes into it. I skipped to the end and still feel I wasted 20 minutes. I felt generous giving it a 6 on IMDB. Won't make a difference, but I had to leave an imprint, however small. A waste of some otherwise very good actors. For me, the head-scratching is part of the experience. One explanation could be the myth of Sisyphus mentioned by Sally. Another could be the storm indicated they were sucked into the Bermuda Triangle where people & things - to the rest of us - disappear. I think Jes does consider using the shotgun on herself. I think, though, at her size, she wouldn't be able to reach the trigger. In any case, she's either cursed or in some weird time-warp, so no matter what she does, she's doomed to go 'round and 'round 'til the curse is fulfilled. The story isn't "Othello," so I don't share your opinion of the acting. I think everyone was up to the task at hand... even the cab driver. If we're "going Greek," he could be Charon, the boatman who takes people to the afterlife... but must be paid. Remember, she stiffs him. Also, there's the "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" in which a sailor is cursed for killing an albatross at sea. Remember Jes hitting that bird. It was hard to tell, but the beak was not that of a seagull. That's all I have. I found it entertainingly puzzling. Not all people want their brains teased. (Do we still say "SPOILER?") I like your explanation, except "good" Jes does survive, as we only see the body of "bad" Jess who was in the trunk. I think, though, that she only survives in that circular world, not in ours. I agree about Charon (I met a girl with that name - must've had weird parents) being the cab driver. But again, as Sally corrects or is corrected about Sisyphus (sounds like VD), he didn't cheat Death, he LIED to him. Good ones. I'd add (SPOILER or two): The recurring soaring seagull could be the "god" or spirit overseeing her punishment (per the story of Sisyphus told later). The ship, of course, refers to the Greek god who metes out that punishment. The soaring bird could also represent an albatross, as in the Rime of the Ancient Mariner, who kills one and thus brings bad luck on his ship and himself. He is forced to wear it 'round his neck as punishment. She kills a bird by her inattention while driving, so perhaps she's punished for that... though she first killed the "mean her." But, in this circular world, who can say what came first? As she descends further into the ship, the lights become redder... closer to Hell? The boy's painting looks like it's under water - foreshadowing. The name of the sailboat is "Triangle." They might have gotten caught in the Bermuda Triangle. It's not just Jes's curse. The others all have to get killed over and over. So maybe that's what happens when things (to the rest of us) disappear there. That would explain the weird storm, too. View all replies >
