Sequel to II, or Sequel to III?

I want this movie to be a straight up sequel to Insidious Chapter II. Even though the third film was amazing, I felt a clear lack of something, that was there in the first and second films, and not the third. Maybe this film could involve Patrick Wilson again, who btw was amazing in both the previous chapters. But let's wait and see. What about your opinions guys? Please discuss all here, in detail

I'd rather see it as a sequel to the third so Elise can still be alive. I feel like there's a lot of potential for many self-contained stories of her cases throughout the years.

But @Casey99 Don't you think that the film franchise should come to an end. Otherwise they would be doing the same thing Paranormal Activity, Saw, Chucky did. I think whatever movie this may be, it should be the final one. I personally want Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne and Ty Simpkins back in action in this one.

I want it to be a continuation of the story at the very end of chapter 2. We saw how Elise started using her gift to help people, how in chapter 3 she found the courage to come back, but now I want to see how she uses her gifts from beyond the grave. I feel like the story is over with the original family so that's kind of why chapter 3 was so refreshing. Either way I'm excited for this because they've done a good job of making all the sequels/prequels almost as good as the original.

yeah, I hope they continue from the chapter 2, about the wheelchair girl, even though chapter 3 have about the same element, a wheelchair girl too. I really really hope they dont messed this up like SAW, I believe in Leigh Whannel, he is one of the best horror scriptwriter in the world!

by the way, this is what Whannel said:

In an interview Leigh Whannell was asked "If there is a fourth Insidious film, would that be a sequel to Chapter 3, another prequel to the original or will it continue in this timeline or go to a whole new timeline?" Whannell stated: "I don’t know. I haven’t really thought about it yet. But for the purposes of this interview, I’ll say that I’d like to explore the time between this film and the first film. That whole area there where Elise has rediscovered her gift, I think you could have a lot of adventures before she arrives. So I think there is a lot of room there. We’ve kind of established Lin [Shaye] in this particular film as kind of this superhero, so that would be kind of interesting to explore in the other films."

I loved the first two movies as a pair, and there are definitely endless possibilities of what cases Elise could encounter before arriving at the point in time of the first movie. But, the reappearance of the lipstick face demon at the very end of chapter two had never been resolved. Perhaps he had gotten more powerful. There was definitely a feeling that the most epic cases were still to come with Elise in spirit form. Someone else could join Elise as a partner and or apprentice, and I also expect some (if trivial) ties to the Lamberts. All I ask is a lipstick face / Godmother of horror showdown!

It shows him at the end of Chapter 3. It doesn't show what appears at the end of Chapter 2 (by the sound and her face, it is implied, but I was hoping it was something else she had encountered before that scared her).

The reason that part three was different was because they realized that they had already wrapped up the original story, which meant that they would not be able to effectively continue milking this IP for all it’s worth since people would complain about further installments being forced and contrived.

The only solution was to move on from that story and go backwards to show other adventures in ghost-hunting that Elise and her team went on. That way, they can continue making [s]money[/s] movies for a long time.

It is a continue of #2. Chapter 3 was the series prequel. Always hoping Patrick comes back to every series he does. I can't wait either.

No way will this be a sequel to chapter 2 for one simple reason. Rose and Patrick are far too big as actors to be starring in a 3rd sequel to a franchise. I'm surprised they managed to get them back for the 2nd chapter - must have been a big pay day.

Looks like we'll get another story set after Leigh's boring chapter 3 and with this director on board, I don't hold much hope.

No disrespect to either Byrne or Wilson as I happen to enjoy them, but they 're hardly big stars. They have had some starring roles in smaller productions (like Insidious) and big parts in blockbusters but the general movie-going audience would most likely struggle to recognise them, much less place them in a specific film or name them.

Besides, you make it sound as if they would be coming in to the franchise at its 3rd sequel when if fact, it's *their* franchise. They established it and the core fans associate it with them and their characters' story.

I want to see what the hell Elise saw at the end of the 2nd chapter. I'm sure it was old red face but it would be cool if it was a different demon.

Unfortunately Whannel said its kind of prequel of the first one. After Elise "cure" the young Patrick Wilson. So, its a sequel to III actually.

As much as i like the role of Patrick Wilson and the rest of his family, i think they did everything with them already. They've been attacked by 2 different entity, a 3rd one would be redundant.

Elise has YEARS of experiences, that means tons of cases that could be much more interesting to see. Plus i do like her side-kicks.
