I understand that they changed some important stuff from the original story.

It just doesn't make any sense to me.

OK, so the guy feels guilty for going along with ripping off the old lady...but falling in love with a 300 year old woman, hallucinating some kind of idyillic past memory about riding a bike with her (*before* he was running out of oxygen), and then going off to his death just because he felt guilty?

The original story is a bit more of a downer but at least it makes sense.

Please tell me I missed something.

They land on the fake Earth, the old woman and the robot walk off into the mist, they take off and leave them...then the guy goes home, can't get rid of his guilt and quits his job...and at the end it turns out the planet WAS Earth after all.

Something like that.

I see what you mean. Why would they want to change that ending? Maybe they wanted to make the guy more sympathetic or something.

Pretty much a suck-ssA ending that didn't make too much sense.
