This Has To Be One Of The Dumbest Shows On FOX

Millennials will watch just about anything it appears

Agree. Its a very very tired remake of every startrek related series ever made. Except its trying to be cute about it, at the same time.

reply

It still did a better job of capturing the Star Trek feel, than every Star Trek that was made after it.

I can see it hitting the spot for certain viewers. I'm kind of a (snobby) SF purist, so most of those shows, esp. the ones portraying we're going to have domesticated like 7 different type of intelligent aliens in the next 400 years, come across as fairly silly. Besides which, the silliness of it seemed forced. Catching his wife in bed with the exploding alien was an early clue about what this show was attempting to do, which did not draw me in. At all.

I can see it as being light entertainment for many. Just, personally, was underwhelmed.

My theory is that they wouldn’t just let Seth McFarland make a “Star trek” type show, without making it a Seth McFarland show. So his typical brand of humor is there, but it’s a small part of show. It still feel like they put a lot of respect into making it a good sci fI show. Usually it’s the first, or last few minutes that have humor, and everything in between is sci fI.

If you like old school trek, I would suggest giving it a little more of a chance to see if it catches you. But for me it’s still way closer to that old Star Trek thst I love, than the new stuff. Star Trek Picard shits on next generation, way more than the Orville does. The Orville is a homage in comparison

reply

Yes, but you are comparing turds.
It's like the new normal type elections we got running - pick the lesser of 2 evils - lol
Have all people lost self respect? WTF do you have to pick the lesser of 2 evils? Why not destroy evil and start electing something good? Same goes for TV shows - if you are justifying watching one turd because it's better than the other turd, I would suggest perhaps finding a show that's not a turd and let turds die out.

Domesticated? You think these non-human species are monkeys or dogs? Savages that needed humans to teach them? If you've actually read any SF then non-humans have been all over the place. We don't know a lot about the species on the Orville yet, but looking at Star Trek, from which Orville derives a lot of inspiration, the Vulcans, Andorians, Tellerites, Klingons, and Romulans, just to name a few, have been in space with sophisticated cultures long before humans did. Personally, I thinks its silly to think we are teaching any of them anything. Cooperating with them is better. (Assuming they are cooperative as well. Klingons and Romulans were not so cooperative.)

Look, I haven't watched the show. It turned me off, and I gave my take as to why.

You seemed to be triggered by the word domesticated. Your interpretation of its use was not my intended meaning. But you could say the alien in bed with the human was fairly domesticated, by any measure.

I am the sort of SciFi fan who doesn't buy these scenarios that there is a club of aliens on hand, ready willing and able to interact with humans, especially at earthlike conditions. Humans themselves couldn't have existed on our planet 300 million years ago.

What we're actually talking about here is space opera, not SF. Which is fine, if you like that sort of thing, as I was saying.

I suggest you monitor your language. Domesticated means to tame and control. Humans domesticated dogs, cats, horses. None of them have any say in their lives or society. To say humans domesticated these species is to say, and only say, that humans control them and teach them their, lower, place in society, if they have any at all.

With the gigantic number of stars available, if life tends to rise, which I believe it does, then there will be many at a similar stage of geological development as earth. Such planets could easily develop compatible species. And you are assuming that a species would have to exist in earth-like conditions to be willing to deal with us.

And I hate that word "triggered." It implies a simplistic mind that is easily upset.

The concept that many non-human species would not have any point of intersection with us is valid, but not the only possibility.

Space Opera is a sub-genre of SF. Others are hard SF, soft SF, cyberpunk, alternate history, robot SF, steampunk, and many others.

Your tastes seem to revolve around a narrow version of SF. That's fine, but you should be a ware that the genre is much larger. Its fine to not embrace all versions of SF. I'm not a fan of cyberpunk, for instant, or dystopic futures. But I don't dismiss them as "not SF."

Oh fuck off, you pompous twit. You care WAY too much about a casual remark.

Find someone else to expound to.

reply

Yes. Typical. Use a word that only means subjugation, and take offense when someone calls you on it.

I was born in '57 and my wife in '62, and we both loved it.

reply

I don't know about you but this is the preachiest show I have ever watched, almost straight social propaganda.

I mean in the first episode the wife cheated on the guy and we were told it was the guy's fault.

I just did not know it was on Fox.

That reinforced my belief that elites had reached a consensus, that is what we are supposed to believe now.

reply

Great TV show. Created their own universe. Good actors and characters.

Sad it's ended.
