Kaylon's

Spoiler: Don't read any further if you've not seen the episode. This is more a bitch post. So don't read if you've not seen it.

So... this all powerful race of androids have studied humans and other life forms in order to decide on if they should join the union.... Then they decide to set out to destroy all intelligent bio-beings because, well, at some point in their pasts they had slavery...

So... they head for Earth first... and are winning the fight, until Isaac says he will use... Da da! EMP to stop all the Kaylons on the ship!

Really?

Can you tell me, if these androids are so advanced... why the hell didn't they figure out how to keep an EMP from shutting them down? You'd think a Faraday Cage placed inside their bodies would prevent that! But no.... No... They were just too smart for their own metallic butts! Oh... and the race that built the Kaylons... stupid. Just plain dumb. All they needed to do was drop a few EMP bombs. Problem solved!

"this all powerful race of androids have studied humans and other life forms in order to decide on if they should join the union"

Or to find the best way to eradicate them. The distrust already existed. I don't think they are "all powerful" since they clearly have many flaws.

"why the hell didn't they figure out how to keep an EMP from shutting them down?"

Their intelligence is limited. A robot can do quick computations, but not necessarily be creative or analyze illogical or emotional behavior. Isaac appears to have gained an emotional component which makes him unpredictable. They didn't expect one of their own to betray them.

Those robots have many weaknesses yet they were able to kill off all the people on their home world.

"All they needed to do was drop a few EMP bombs."

Big difference between being on a self-contained ship and being on a planet especially if there were millions or billions of robots. The robots who were doing work for humans could have had control over the computer systems which meant they had control of all weapons like EMPs and bombs, etc.

Humans on the ship were helpless. It took another robot to take them out.

"they head for Earth first... and are winning the fight, until Isaac says he will use"

The Kaylons had control of the Orville, but the Krills were able to destroy many of their attack ships.

reply

Kaylon's what? What is it that belongs to the Kaylon?

reply

I think the thread starter forgot to type another word after Kaylon's, maybe like "Intelligence" or something. Or they misunderstand how to use apostrophes.

reply

Why didn't the EMP also shut down the Orville's electronics? How does Isaac know about this flaw in the first place?

reply

That's a very good question. You'd think the EMP would have hurt the ship as well as the robots.

reply

Well, the "electronics" in the future are unknown, but electronics even today can be shielded from EMPs. I would think that a ship that has other defensive weapons would be vulnerable to an EMP and easily defeated without shielding.

Actually, only a small amount of the ship would need to be shielded as conduits and interconnections could all be optical.

Whether EMP shielding could be integrated into the more tightly assembled androids is another discussion.

reply

You can't shield most of today's electronics. Antennas and displays need to be exposed. The conduits for power develop huge voltages.

reply

Thinking in terms of the future. Each console or articulated appendage could be self powered by a "battery" the size of pea.

Antennas would be exposed yes, but displays absolutely can be shielded.

reply

It was unfortunately a convenient plot device, just like Yaphit being able to just ooze into Isaac's body and reboot him at the end. Some of the writing doesn't make sense, but then again, there are little things here and there about the show that have bothered me too.

reply

It's not the brightest show but as long as they aren't being preachy I can cut them some slack.
