Trying Hard to Place Julie Walter's Accent in This

Any ideas?

Scottish?

reply

Irish, but I couldn't say where apart from not Northern Irish.

reply

Sounds discernibly Scottish to my ears.

reply

It's Scottish.

reply

I think it's an attempt at Scottish, but fell in to Irish here and there. I know JW's mother was Irish and she can do an excellent Irish accent. They can be so similar and I think she subconsciously reverted to what she does best.

reply

I had the same thought when she was stood at the top of the stairs talking to Paul, I thought she had a cold at one stage

reply

Me too. It's a distraction from what's going on

reply

Meant to be Scottish I think but not convincing - I say that as a Scot

reply

Think I would agree , having a Scottish mother and lived there when younger. But it's true that Walters is usually excellent at what she does, including accents. It does have an occasional Irish twang from time to time, maybe adding the Irish elements to tie in with her Catholic faith, though this would be very sterio-typical.

I agree with a former comment that basically it's just quite distracting from what's being played out.

reply

It's a poor attempt at a Scottish accent. I don't know why the character needs to be Scottish as well. I'm sure plenty of Scots men marry English women!

reply

They probably made her Scottish because Julie Walters' natural brummie accent would be too much to bear over four episodes.

reply

This is worse though because at least she cannot mess up her own accent.

reply

Some kind of Scottish, but it keeps veering into Northern Irish and American.

I agree- it's a real shame because the series -and her acting- is otherwise spot on. By episode 3 I was finally able to put it to one side, but before that I found it a distraction.
D'you think that people are so in awe of certain beloved and admired actors that when they say that they'll do something, no one has the heart or the guts to tell them that they're actually rubbish at it?
