I only finished it 24 hours ago so it’s still gestating, but I can tell when I’ve watched a classic because it haunts me after watching it and I’m already getting nagged by Flower Moon, especially reflecting on how monstrous the killers were.
Ernest killed his wife’s sister. It took a while to sink in because we never see her react to that revelation (a flaw in the film?) but just imagining how evil you’d have to be to blow up your wife’s completely innocent sister, her husband, and their maid… is skin crawling.
As is the moment when Mollie kindly gives Ernest’s brother a cushion as he goes to sleep on her couch… moments after he shot her other sister, his wife, in the head.
It’s somewhere between a history lesson and a horror movie, and much like Rosemary’s Baby chills the blood when you think about how psychotic and cruel seemingly normal people can be.
