I didn't like the ending

Why did they do that?
People don't like sad endings. They lost a lot of money because of this

reply

Who said people don't like "sad endings"?
Speak for yourself. And that wasn't a "sad" ending....(SPOILERS)....it's more of a "holy sh-t, I didn't expect that" ending.
It was a mind-blower, and people like twists. In this case, many folks probably saw the twist coming. But either way, they change a movie from being ho-hum predictable, and cookie-cutter.....and it turns the movie into something you talk to people about days later. It makes it more impactful, more memorable.

Consider a movie like "The Sixth Sense". That ending (may) have been perceived as "sad" as well. But that "GOTCHA" twist was such a mindblower that people loved it. It turned the whole movie into an enormous hit.

And either way, even with a "twist"....not all movies, not all stories, end all happy-happy, with rainbows and unicorns. How did you do with "Platoon"? How about "Saving Private Ryan"? How about the Brad Pitt movie "Seven"? WHat about "Terms of Endearment"?

I could go on and on. Some movies make you laugh. Some make you cry. SOme take you on a rollercoaster ride. The good ones.....make you FEEL. And not all the feelings in the emotional spectrum are happy-happy.

i did see the twist coming. the acting was good but i just felt something was missing. i did like the creature though.

reply

Me too. The ending was obvious. I said to my wife at the end that I would be surprised if the woman was in the ocean!

The camera took too long focusing on the exterior of both pods, it was obvious, and a dumbass gotcha. Twists for basics.

reply

I really didn't find it necessary. First off, the fact there were 2 pods gave off 'that' vibe. And then they tried to play the shell game.

In my opinion, it's just a movie, so you can make a happy ending and everyone can imagine for themselves what a sad ending would be. Making a sad ending is simply unnecessary. It's just a movie and we all know they can do whatever they want.

You can't compare this to The Sixth Sense because that twist was a real twist and not just a shell game.

Sure, there are films that don't end happy. I'm not really sure Platoon is a good example. It simply ended as it started. A sad ending would have been if Sheen had died. "Seven" ends with the villain dead. Lots of crime movies include good people dying. Most do. And some movies are written to have sad endings; Terms is one, Love Story, One Flew Over... but all those films have a different purpose, far from a science fiction film. A film like Love Story, Steel Magnolias, Terms; they all tug at your heart and probably make most cry.

In "Life" you could have seen the twist coming a lot more than a mile away. A twist is something sudden and totally unexpected. Sixth Sense, Saw, Identity; those were awesome twists that came in an instant and no one saw coming.

In "Life" it was nothing more than a choice.

The DVD will probably come with an alternate ending. Twist movies don't have alternate endings.

It was a cookie-cutter movie to begin with. Mission to Mars gone awry. Claustrophobic, "trapped in space" feel....with an alien onboard. Sound familiar. We've seen this movie countless times already. The best they could do is throw in a few twists. Call it a shell game...call it a twist...call it a gotcha moment....call them whatever you'd like. It would have been dumb, IMO, to have a happy ending. If they did that....it would have just been "Gravity", and we just saw that 2 summers ago.

Killing off Ryan Reynolds early on was a decent gotcha moment. ANd the old pod switcheroo was a decent twist as well. Even if you saw it coming, it was still a satisfying ending. A movie like that NEEDS to end dismally. It would have just been cheesy and a sellout to have a happy ending. Besides, how do you even HAVE a "happy" ending after how badly things went for everyone, how they died...how badly they died.

To each their own. You're entitled to your opinion. My point to the OP was simply that he/she was being naive and polyannaish to suggest the ending should have been happy. My point was...not all STORIES are happy, or have happy endings. Such is life.

No one saw the twist coming in The Sixth Sense? ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…

I wish I were.

But of course, saw the twist in Life coming a mile off. If I'm dead honest, I saw this movie for 2 reasons alone. Jake Gyllenhaal, and that maybe I low key root for Daniel Espinoza doing well in Hollywood since safe House wasn't too bad. Heja Sverige!

And my instinct is to IMMEDIATELY want to cover your ass.

A friend started telling me
about The Sixth Sense when it was released. I stopped him and said, โ€œBruce Willis is dead, right?โ€ If you didnโ€™t see that obvious alleged โ€œtwistโ€ (the refuge of the narratively-challenged) coming, you need an eye exam.

reply

It's unexpectedly shocking and sad, but brilliant ending. I'm glad they didn't make a happy ending.

reply

I think the ending was fine. What didn't work well was the choice of Norman Greenbaum during the end credits. Probably one of the darkest endings as of 2017 I've seen in a while, and then Spirit in the Sky comes on in the end credits. Also, I think it would've worked better if was edited differently to impact the ending harder. In fact, the dark ending should have gone further.

Say the ending focused on Jake Gyllenhaal's pod as one scene, and then cut to Rebecca Ferguson's. Just have the movie's end focusing on her hurdling into deep space, no music in the background, just her screaming and the controls going awry, then cut to outside the pod where we can't hear her scream (because in space no one can hear you scream), and watch as the pod drifts further, and further until you can't see it anymore, and then...Directed by Daniel Espinosa. No Spirit in the Sky, no music. Just pure silence as the credits play over the shot in space, and maybe as the credits continue to roll, the camera pans over to earth, and we see lights from all around the world begin to go off. Maybe its like an accelerated montage were HUGE fires break out, maybe a several HUNDRED explosions, and it just ends with the total destruction of Earth.

I loved the ending and also wish it hadn't ended with that upbeat song against the credits. I understand that they probably thought the irony would be entertaining but in this case, it didn't fit.

reply

I loved the ending and I thought the song was a pefect choice for the credicts. Me and my friend turned to each other laughed and said "great song choice". It helps that I dig the song anyway.

reply

Can you explain why you thought it was perfect? I like the song too, but the score right at the end (before the credits) was really harrowing and intense--and then comes "Spirit in the Sky". WTF? Were they trying to defuse the horror in the pit of my stomach? Why?

reply

almost every horror movie has a sad ending though. every single alien movie had an ending like that to set up for a sequel.

reply

Is there going to be a sequel to this? Because even though I didn't really like this film all that much, I would absolutely watch a sequel about a containment force trying to prevent Calvin from spreading, especially if it were made in as serious and sterile a manner as Sputnik.

reply

It seems like a sad/unexpected ending just for the sake of it.

reply

I kind of liked it since it was definitely a twist. The rest of the movie was mediocre.

Calvin surely enjoyed the ending.

lol

lol.

reply

I liked the ending, conceptually, but I thought it was poorly executed.

The way it was shot, I just didn't believe the events. The actors didn't react the way they would if they were going the directions they were going. I didn't believe Calvin's pod could be corrected that quickly. It was like they shot it one way and then just switched it. A nice idea for a twist, but it didn't add up for me.

reply

This is exactly how I felt. The idea/twist wasnโ€™t bad, but the way it was shot was.

reply

Agrered thats why the ending was so confusing for a lot of us. We didn't make the connection the pods switched trajectories cause the actors didn't really indicate that was happening. In fact I think that was the whole point was to fool the audience and pull a fast one by alleging the pods were on different trajectories. Its not a case of an unreliable narrative it flat switch the ending at the last possible second. Even going as far as to not show the womans reaction until after calvins pod landed. It felt too much like an ass pull rather then a briliant plot twist.

reply

Yes, that ending was effd up. Ruined the movie in my opinion.
