Jumping timelines...

I'm 5 episodes in and it is as confusing as hell. I finally found out that there are 3 different timelines going on. I'm sorry but that's just piss-poor production. I don't know when's going on!

yeah, they just throw you in and let you try to figure it out, like I thought that character was dead? Is that her mother? Or her when she's older? What, 3 decades pass in a week? Huh?

I sort of figured it out by the 7th episode

Omg yes totally confused me too. It’s a good series but they did an awful job of making you aware of the jumping timelines. I didn’t realize this was going on until a scene played out almost exactly from the beginning of the series (with a few variations).

You see this more often in European cinema, American productions usually go out of their way to drop clues so you realize when a time jump has occurred. This show makes no effort to let you know when it happens though - or even how many distinct time periods there are. You have to figure that out on your own and it really takes a second viewing of the series to fully appreciate the story.

Season 1 of Westworld deliberately avoided calling attention to its two distinct time periods because that was going to be a reveal later on (for those who hadn't already put it together). But The Witcher doesn't spring that on you as a surprise. I think they should've made more of an effort to mark the transitions for viewers. My one serious criticism of an otherwise excellent show.

Takes a second viewing to appreciate the story ...

That might be OK for a 90 minute - 3 hour movie. But this series is 8 episodes, adding to almost 9 hours total altogether. Ain’t nobody got time for a second viewing

If you don't feel like a rewatch, just check this out:

It's an official timeline that shows the exact ordering of events, including the year - I'm assuming year zero corresponds to the Conjunction of the Spheres, the event responsible for allowing humans and monsters to cross into this world.

I had the same problem. The episode four wedding feast confused me since I thought the actresses who played Ciri (daughter) and Pavetti (mother) looked similar. My theory is that the director wanted to have equal screen time for Geralt, Yennifer and Ciri. It is a Witcher show so I believe Geralt should get more screen time.

I didn't like that they showed the siege of Cintra during episode one without Geralt and then showed it again in episode seven with more scenes of Geralt. Why not just introduce Ciri in episode seven or even season two? An episode or two could have been devoted to origins stories for Geralt or even Renfri.

A narrator or years appearing on the screen could have solved the time jump confusion.

They needed to at least make a transition sound like with LOST. You always knew when a flashback was happening.

Not only is the time jumping so poorly done, it is just pointless. There is no reason for the first season to do it.
