Robert Eggers doesn’t know how to make movies 3/10

He has wasted my time twice now with The Witch and the The Northman and he is going to do it for third time with this borefest. It is really a waste all this effort and money to shot 18th century scenery and missing just a little wit to make an interesting story with all this. It is really a pity that all this money goes to such spiritless projects, it's like there is no talent left in the film industry anymore. I'm 10 minutes in and the vibes of The Witch and the The Northman are hitting hard, I cant finish this, I will not, It suck horse

EDIT: I managed to finish it today out of curiosity, I didn't expected it to be that bad but it really is a bad movie, new rating is 2/10 because of the costumes, otherwise it would be 1/10

It’s “doesn’t” not don’t - it helps if you know how to say something. You should check first to see if your grammar is correct before posting. Especially if you are going to blast something.

There is an inside look video that is on Peacock on the making of this most beautiful movie - I mean really this movie exceeds all others. They built the castle - they built the little Hanseatic town. The woman who is the head of costumes made everything by hand - you should see the costumes especially for the little girls. It’s like out of a painting. The script is fantastic. The musical score uses strings, an orchestra and a choir in conjunction with archaic horns and pipes and shells to create this creepy gothic atmosphere one full of medieval dread. Lily-Rose Depp’s body morphosis was all her - the writhing, the contortions. And then we have Orlock, the nosferatu (vampire), by way of Bill Skarsgård and his height and the finger extensions - full frontal nude too - and that unearthly voice. Not to mention the plague caused by the vermin - I’d like to know how they had so many - they say 5000 rats.

This is one of the most beautiful movies I have seen and there are many. Eggers has made a masterpiece of art. 10/10

I agree with most of what you said, letess. The period detail and scenery were superb. However, I do wonder why if this film took place in Germany (or a country in which gentlemen are addressed as "Herr), all of the actors and actresses speak in British accents. If authenticity is so sacrosanct, why weren't they trained and directed to speak in German accents (or the accent of whichever European mainland nation in which these proceedings are taking place)?

Also, ByTheVineyard's point is a valid one. His/her complaint is one of writing, not art direction or acting skill. I agree. The story is slow. It is boring, muddled, and the ending is rather anti-climactic, as it is basically a case of predestination. So I think what ByTheVineyard is asking is why heap elaborate sets, costume design, and production values on a mediocre (if not poor) script?

To answer your first paragraph, I imagine it's done for commercial reasons.

I remember interviews with Eggers in the run up to The Northman. He was asked if he had considered shooting it in black-and-white like The Lighthouse and he said no, the movie is too big a production to do that.

I believe he also was asked about the possibility of shooting The Northman in old Norse. I think he said he'd have loved to and it was considered but it wouldn't have been viable commercially.

Murnau’s Nosferatu is German. The town created looked like a hamlet. Didn’t really connect that it was Hanseatic. And it was the old Romanian accents that were the most important anyway. Until your post, I didn’t realize that authenticity should probably be a German accent. British accents in Gladiator really bothered me. But British accents are used in most storytelling.

I didn’t think this movie was long or muddled. After sitting through The Brutalist and then the next one The Seed of the Sacred Fig - this one was a breeze and the one after, Mulholland Drive, definitely a breeze. Movies now run over three hours.

I disagree with ByTheVineyard who has since downgraded Nosferatu from 3/10 to 1/10. Whereas Coppola’s movie was cinematically more lush, it was also a love story. This one is bleak and depressing and visceral. It is more of a need than a want. Her melancholy and loneliness are so deep that she seeks and finds sexual gratification while suspended in air. Depp’s somewhat of a contortionist.

Fantastic dialogue. Orlock says, “I am an appetite. Nothing more. O'er centuries, a loathsome beast, I lay within the darkest pit. 'Til you did wake me, enchantress, and stir me from my grave.” 10/10. I think it deserved more nominations and I think Depp was extremely good. But the image and sound of Orlock was exceptional. As for the ending, it was her sacrifice of herself that kept him there longer and was his undoing. Not to mention seeing 5000 rats. So German.

Prolly not your kind of movie then. Go back to your anime or video games.
