Who thought it was a good idea to let his parents join in?

Their acting was terrible, his dad was cringey (the scene where he plays on his Ipad in Ep. 2), his mom's like a robot. Huge turn off!

I concur.

I thought the first episode was very good.

Then the second contained some of the worst acting I have ever seen, by both parents of the main character, and so I stopped watching now.

I am fairly certain that was deliberate. Ansari's father had the crew working on the show in stitches playing that part, he has generally gotten rave reviews for his comedic tilt. I thought his parents were terrific in the show, they perfectly embodied the awkwardness adult children with no real direction feel about their parents, both wanting to please them and to be left alone.

And I have to say, I had no idea how they would accept Rachel. If they would go the "why not a nice Indian girl" way, or equate living together with upcoming nuptials. I have to say he made an excellent choice in casting his own parents. Looking forward to season 2.

I am not sure those lines/characters called for great acting anyway. If Meryl STreep accepted the role to play my mom and followed her around to get the real her, I bet everyone would say Meryl couldn't act and her performance was wooden and dreary. My mom is no Mame Dennis.

They're both good, especially the Dad, he was hilarious.

A lot of people here seem to like his parents. Me too, his dad seems like a right laugh. Problem is they're bloody awful actors, the pair of them. It was a sentimental decision by Ansari, putting them in this. He could and should've hired proper actors. They're extremely bad and stick out like a sore thumb.

The dad acted decently. I agree with your point of view on the mother though.

I am shocked by the amount of people that enjoy either of his parents. After the second episode I assumed they had to be his real parents because they would never get a job based on their acting ability. The closing scene of that episode when he was playing on his iPad was absolutely terrible. Neat idea to include his real parents but after one take they should have noticed it wasn't going to work.

Why is it our job to save everyone? Haven't we done enough?

reply

Awww... I thought it was sweet, although I suspected, based on the acting ability, that they were his real parents before I read for sure that they were. I thought this was a wonderful episode.

I wasn't crazy about the first episode and gave up on it for a while but then I heard from many people that it was a pretty good show and I heard Aziz interviewed on the Freakonomics podcast and decided to give it another try. Glad I did.

Yeah, seriously! They are so monotone and wooden. I've seen better acting on Nickelodeon and The Disney Channel, so why would I watch this crap? The Asian guy is a *beep* actor too. Also, what kind of camera do they shoot this show on? It looks so low-budget, like a student film.

reply

What everyone else said. They were not great (especially the mother) but there was something endearing and sweet about their parent that made me overlook the poor acting.

If I don't reply, you're probably on my ignore list for something I forgot already

I LOVE the fact that he's using his real parents, and they're obviously not professional actors. In fact, if they were mediocre passable actors, it wouldn't be nearly as interesting as what they do now. Sure, if they were excellent actors it would be great, but in a different direction.

The mom looks like she's reading cue cards, and the dad tries his best to ham it up. It's an interesting insight into Asiz's personality, whom I find delightful everytime I see him.
