No. Originally the Duffer Brothers had planned on her character being straight and having a relationship with Steve, but Maya got this stupid idea of introducing "diversity" into the show by making Robin a closet case, and the Duffer Brothers said it was okay (completely ruining Robin, thanks a lot) and that's why we have two different moments where, we first hear about Robin telling Steve she had been watching him from afar in school for a long time, and then after they took the truth serum, we suddenly have a scene where they're tied up and fallen on the floor, and then she suddenly confesses that she wasn't actually watching Steve from afar, but a girl who had been crushing on him instead.

It's too bad, I liked Robin before she came out to Steve.

To be honest, Robin would have had a terrible time being gay in the Midwest in the 1980s. That area was heavily Christian and gays were not seen as cool at all outside of Hollywood or Broadway. In fact, even a lot of liberals back then saw them as gross and unnatural. There's a reason many stayed in the closet outside the cities.

Chances are, if Robin is to have any hope of a "happy ending," (if she survives the last season) she'll probably have to move away to some place like San Francisco, LA, or even France to find a place where nobody would care if she was gay or not. Because she would have no hope of following that lifestyle and not destroying her own life in Indiana.
