Russians? Seriously?

How can American forces not find out about a super secret Soviet base manned by an army of Russians underneath a mall?

The show jumped the shark with this one.

Yep, but you know the obligatory comment some idiot will make:

"...So you are telling me you don't believe that Russians can build a base in the US on a show about parallel universes and monsters?"

You would be surprised how many secret enemy dealings slip through the cracks into America under the Feds' and CIA's noses, even today. Either that, or the govt. knew all about it and was watching to see what the Russians would do next before making a move. The CIA often does that to give the enemy a false sense of security before a strike is made.

We couldn't even stop the Russians from picking our President in the 21st century! And this was thirty years before that.

If they used a decommissioned mine for their base all the tunnel and cavern excavation would've been done already. That would have eliminated the need to cart tons of dirt to the surface and spend ... oh, at least ten years digging. Anything that might otherwise need explaining to local government officials was taken care of by the corrupt mayor in their back pockets.

Are you trying to tell us all this stuff is far-fetched? Gee, I hadn't noticed. My neighbor's kid is telekinetic and we see creatures from other dimensions around here all the time. Just ask the North Koreans when they come out of their secret bunker under the Taco Bell for some fresh air. This town is nuts!

Some strategic minds in the US military think that the Ruskies already have buried nukes hidden in America. I wonder if it is true.

It is a show that takes places in the 80ties... so using Russians as the bad guys makes so much sense... was it a little far fetched that no one would know... maybe... but I didn't mind...

Season 3 was much better than season 2...

The Cold War was still going on at the time, at least up until 1991. They were putting out TV movies such as The Day After (1983) to scare American citizens into the dangers of what could possibly happen if those commies attacked.

I'm kinda glad they used the Russian angle. I'm not sure where they could have gone storywise. Some of the funniest scenes took place with the scientist, Joyce, Hopper, and Murray Bauman.

And that one Terminator-looking dude was badass.
