Is it possible to make a universally liked "Robin Hood" film?

Ridley Scott tried to make a grittier, more realistic "Robin Hood" film. I thought it was quite boring.

Now, Otto Bathurst has made a lighter, more superhero-ish "Robin Hood" ... and it looks a little silly, based on the trailers.

Even Disney's "Robin Hood" from 1973 only has a 52% approval rating on RT with an average rating of 5.4/10 based on 25 reviews.

It leaves me wondering: what do people want from a Robin Hood film? What is the right tone to strike with the character?

Frankly, I think a lot of ancient British medieval lore has been done to death. Why can't we try something else for a change? Like some of the lesser known stuff?

I think filmmakers find big, recognizable brand names a lot safer and easier to finance than lesser-known stuff. "Robin Hood" is a known quantity.

Of course. If they made Kevin Costner's Robin Hood like Braveheart I think it would have been very well received. Needs to be serious and romantic, not gritty. Not funny.

Pardon me, but Braveheart had not come out yet when Costner's film was being made, so they did not have the inspiration available.

I don't think people want to see Robin Hood movies at all.

Maybe make Robin Hood vs Zombies (or vampires). People hate them anyway why not go all out and make them so bad they're good.

Can't be any worse then "Cowboys and Aliens".

They did. It's called Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

Prince of Thieves isn't universally liked, but I do enjoy it quite a bit myself. If anything the film is underrated.

Men in tights and Prince of thieves were my favorites. Rest were meh and I grew up watching those as a kid so it may play a bias role but I really did enjoy them and still do to this day. This 're-imagining', code word for 'diversifying' was just a horrible attempt to fill the quotas and try to make a quick buck while having horrid reviews.
