Race


Given that raiding was a major feature of the Dark Ages (and before and afterward), and that capturing people who could be sold into slavery was one of the main reasons for such raids, I think it pretty unlikely that there were no black people in northern Europe at this time. Just as there would have been plenty of north Europeans who had ended up in the slave markets of north Africa. This would not necessarily have been seen as something to note especially in the records. I read that 30% of cowboys were black- but I've never seen a Western that showed that.

Probably was some black slaves in Northern Europe, but probably like most slaves, either killed or if got freedom, went back to their homelands. Not many want to stick around in a place where they were slaves or want to assimilate into their society. A free black man in Northern Europe that has any respectable position probably would be as likely as any Northern European who was a slave to have a respectable position in an African society.
