Costner might still be in several episodes in flashback form leading up to his demise (I've heard nothing so that's only speculation).
I think it was smart to kill John Dutton off but I also think they should not use Costner in limited flashback appearances. The last episodes will carry the viewership without him but will also let them know if the remaining characters can carry the show without John Dutton or perhaps as a spinoff series with the rest of the cast.
Once viewers get used to seeing the Dutton kids, Rip, Lloyd, Teeter, etc. without Costner, they may go ahead with a direct spin-off of Yellowstone keeping the characters and ranch. Perhaps a season or two showing the transitioning of the Yellowstone ranch to commercial meat production as was hinted last season - a transition that would finally ensure Yellostone's survival for the rest of the century.
I would also like to see Rainwater and Mo get some of what they want - maybe part of the Dutton ranch. I mean, it's big enough certainly.
