Very good WWII film spoiled by annoying shaky-cam

Will this god-awful love for using the shaky-camera effect to try and make audiences believe they are watching something "as it happens" PLEASE GO AWAY ALREADY??!!

Every scene in this film where the actors were in anything closer than a long shot was filmed in this stupid style and it detracted from the scenes that should have kept the concentration on the drama of the story rather than having the audience's attention jarred around like a bunch of bobbleheads.

At least the film led up to action scenes at the end where at least it wasn't so painfully obvious then.

Do people feel that there were way too many closeups?

reply

I did, and that's not normally something that would jump out to me as a negative. I also felt like the closeups lingered a few beats too long before cutting to the next scene; it did something strange to the rhythm of the film for me.

Interesting how many people here are commenting on the camera work. I wasn't sure if I was just imagining things!

reply

May be director should have hired camera man rather then doing it by himself. At least performance of all actors are amazing. Especially the main lead.

reply

I agree--there were excellent performances in this film. I only wish they hadn't been made so hard to focus on without getting eye strain.

Mustard goes on Hot Dogs. Mayo goes on Burgers. There will be no compromise on this.

Just got back from seeing this film. I hate the shaky cam style. Does nothing but make viewer wonder why they couldn't afford a real professional cameraman! That being said I don't think this film suffered too greatly from it compared to others I've seen.

AGREE! And . . . I almost puked. Seasick symptoms. blahhhhh . . . Loved the film otherwise . . .

This movie sucked because not only that execrable shaky-cam (90% of the movie) but also close-ups for maybe half the movie. I rated this 2/10 because of these faults, and unintelligible mumbling, in low voice, in a mysterious dialect.

Every review I have read complains about the camera work. When i saw it, I thought the same.

Conservatives, I hear your complaints. What are your solutions?

reply

Its such a damn shame because of director bad decision of being cinematographer as well make the brilliant performance of the cast weak.

My wife had to leave the room early due to nausea from the shaky cam and close-ups.

reply

That's funny... I hadn't noticed the shaky cam effect but I had to prematurely exit because I felt similarly nauseous...

reply

Wait, the camera shook?

Hmmm...didn't even notice.

Reading this thread, I am wondering if everyone is senior or something.

Shaky cam serves its purpose here : a movie with tension and action. The masterpiece Saving Private Ryan used it just as well and it was flawless.

I never noticed it either. I am 50. I don't know how old you have to be before it bothers you.

I am a huge fan of Battlestar Galactica as it happens. Some of the viewers of that show complain about the shaky cam style it was shot in.

Perhaps seen the series so many times that I am immune to the shaky cam ;-)

I can't remember being bother by it the first time I watched BSG either though.
