Most of those films, in my mind anyway, are inferior to Captain Marvel. At least one of them, Fury Road, doesn't qualify as a female-led film by any stretch. More importantly, why single out films for having a female lead? Why can't you simply accept Captain Marvel as a superhero film, or an action film? Why does the gender of the protagonist matter to you?

Marvel and Reee! Larson promoted CM as the first female led action movie ever made. I'm pointing out CM is not the first and there are actually far better ones to watch.

I don't recall even once seeing any advert or interview where anyone associated with the film mentioned it as being the first female-led action movie ever made. Can you share any evidence of this rather unusual claim you are making?

As for the list, ignoring films like Terminator or Fury Road which have male protagonists, the only ones I'd consider as good or better than Captain Marvel would be the two Alien films and the first Kill Bill. I mean, it's all personal taste, and if you really think, say, Barbarella is better than Captain Marvel, it's your right to do so, but I certainly question your taste in films if you're sincere about this list.

They promoted the fuck out of CM using the gender issue front and centre. Its not exactly out of left field that some one might challenge the assertions made of this very average entry in the marvel series.

Where did you see promotion using gender front and center? I saw a lot of backlash focused on gender, but very little promotion of the film that gave more than passing mention to the gender of the hero. It's noteworthy that it's the first MCU film to feature a female lead, so that fact was mentioned, but really in a minor way in comparison to the focus of the promotion-- MCU film, lead-in to Endgame, '90s period piece, young Sam Jackson-- all those elements received far more play than anything gender-related.

I saw a lot of ads and heard a lot of hype, but none of it made a big deal out of gender. You're the one making the outlandish claim, do you have any evidence? What ads did you see that focused on gender?

The Wonder Woman movie had a heavy-handed feminist message in the film, and perhaps a bit more in the ad campaign leading up to it, but I saw none of that in the Captain Marvel campaign, and certainly none in the film.

If you actually saw a lot of ads and heard any hype at all you know how focused it all was on it being Marvel's first female lead superhero movie, even though it's not. Plus every time Brie Larson opened her mouth was to promote it for it's gender focus. And before you say that's not the ad campaign, the star talking about it is part of a movie's promotion. But who knows, maybe they only released the movie on international women's day by accident.

I feel like I saw a constant barrage of ads, and never once do I remember seeing or hearing that it was the first ever female-led action film (the original poster's claim), ot that it was the first female superhero film (another poster's claim). It is the only of the so-far 23 MCU films where the lead hero is female, but even that, if it was ever mentioned at all, was mentioned in passing. The ONLY mention of gender I recall in any ad campaign was a clever, subtle one-- the word HER appeared on screen, with an O appearing a beat later to spell HERO. As for the movie itself-- absolutely zero attention paid to Captain Marvel's gender, and no plot points related to gender, politics, feminism, social justice, etc. The latter was refreshing, as I feared I was going to sit through a 2-hour lecture on women's rights, a la Wonder Woman, but instead got a kick-ass action film.

14, maaaybe 15 of the movies on your list are better than Cpt Marvel. The rest are laughable.

Cpt Marvel was 40% a good movie. They started off very good. Then dumb things started happening with greater frequency and poor Fury ended up a one-note comedy relief character by the middle. Still, when it was all said and done, the movie wasn't terrible. It just had some terrible aspects. I'd say it was slightly above average. B- I expect the next one to be much better but am not looking forward to the "battles" over intent by the "experts" of both sides.

I really don't care about the whole feminism storm around it. Plenty of great girl-hero movies as some of your list shows. Some missteps in press junkets outside of the film itself is meaningless.
