Smilegate?

I'm tuning in late to this part of the online conversation about the CM trailer. Truth be known, I didn't care that Brie Larson's character didn't smile in the trailer, as these first trailers are typically a quick tease and little else. I'm convinced we will see more of the character (and her moods) in future trailers.
What does intrigue me, is the response from viewers, SJW people and the actress herself. Does she have a point? Perhaps. It's likely that some psychological application of a double-standard for her versus a male super hero is happening. However I think that when you are portraying an MCU super hero, you need to be a bit understanding. People have expectations but let's be fair, Brie Larson isn't Paul Rudd. She doesn't have that kind of outgoing, fun personality. She's a subdued, kind of angry person (at least she comes across that way), yet for all we know that might be exactly the personality of Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. And I'll admit to being somewhat predisposed to disliking her. Let's face it, she's not the most friendly of people. Given that strike against her, I still have faith in the guidance of Kevin Feige to get the best from her in the role. Guess we will see how her character translates via the big screen. I'm optimistic, if not initially enthused by the trailer.
We will see.

Her being serious and determined is actually pretty in line with her comics persona.

I think you might have a point as people complained Thor was a bit stuffy, so they made him more of a goofball. Outside the MCU, people also wanted Henry Cavill's Superman to smile but that had to do with the nature of the character (Superman is supposed to be friendly and out going). Benedict Cumberbatch didn't smile much as Dr Strange but the teasers still had some dry humor and maybe that's what people are really missing. I don't mind a lack of humor but that is a staple of superhero flicks these days. I expect the next trailer will probably have a few more jokes.

As far as I'm concerned, I don't care if she smiles or not. She's a Kree warrior with amnesia, so I'm not expecting her to be cracking jokes just yet.

There's just something about Lawson, she's like ... when you have a cover teacher, sometimes you like them and sometimes you know they're just a miserable bitch from the moment they walk in. She's like the cover teacher who teaches a subject you love, but she drains all the passion out of it by being a gloomy pill, and just draining any happiness from the room.

Do you mean substitute teacher?

reply

In the UK we say cover teacher, or supply! But yes, it's the same thing.

Search Google images for Brie Larson. Lots of pix of her smiling and showing her boobs. That's what superheroes should look like!

I can't believe people are whining that she isn't smiling. When the hell do Captain America or Bruce Banner smile!

Honestly, I can remember the Marvel movie Captain America ever smiling, and he's been in ten or eleven films now.

she did smile twice in the trailer; the issue was that she was more wooden than Pinoccio with her indifferent expressions; horrible teaser trailer.

reply

Without seeing the whole movie yet how do we know that isn’t part of the movie.

reply

We don't, but that does not matter. If the leading future-MCU character, and first female MCU lead, is essentially a wooden piece of indifference she will be an utterly unintriguing protagonist - especially considering that MCU focuses so strongly on protagonists hardly having any interesting long term villains a la Magneto, Joker etc.

She looks bored.
