Simon Helberg is getting overlooked
If anyone deserves an Award nomination for this movie it's him.
His comedic timing and facial expressions were on point

I second your opinion!
shareHe was adorable and gave a hilarious, yet nuanced performance, but I feel he's getting swallowed up by the Meryl/Hugh-centric advertising of the film. Very unfair.
shareHe's brilliant and literally takes the film from Streep.
shareCouldn't agree more
shareNo, he doesn't.
He was wonderful, but there are other actors who could have done a great job, also. There is no other actor who could have portrayed Jenkins as well....and few actors who could have turned in the performance that Grant did. The whole relationship hinged on Grant's performance.
That's why they call Streep and Grant lead actors, and Simon a supporting actor.
I hope they all get nominated.
Not accurate at all.. Look at Mark Rylance in Bridge of Spies. He won the Oscar as a "supporting Actor", however, no one who has seen the movie would utter that he is in any way, an inferior actor to Tom Hanks!
shareWell, I guess we'll see if he's overlooked or not when the Oscar nominations come out. I'm sure Streep will get an actress and Grant and actor nod, but Helberg might get supporting. That would be a huge boost to his career. Even if he doesn't, this film being what it is will open doors for him.
shareI LOVED him in this. Thought he had an incredibly expressive face and gave a charming, mannered performance. But my movie companion hated him so it might be one of those love it or hate it kinda things.
shareI've only ever seen him in this and BBT (which is not my cup of tea) but he really reminds me of a young Gene Wilder in this. It's his facial expressions for me.
shareI like him as an actor but disappointed that they chose to cast a white actor for a Mexican person in real life.
shareangel-arch, maybe they cast Helberg for this part is because he looked like actual man he was portraying, if this was based on true events. They usually cast for type in films, rather than the actor's ethnicity.
shareI would agree with you if it was an isolated event, but there is always a reason to cast a white actor. Of course it is not always the case, but it happens more often than not.
Emma Stone looked like the Asian/Hawaiian character she portrayed
Jeremy Irons and Meryl Streep have more box office appeal to play iconic characters in The House of Spirits.
But whatever the reason the results are similar where POC do not get the opportunity to play great characters that would increase their mainstream appeal
They also needed an actor who could play piano, as Simon and Meryl are playing/singing for real. Not only their own recording, but live when shooting the movie.
shareSimon was the highlight of the film for me, which is no small feat considering the talent involved here. He brought a satisfying mixture of humor and desperation, and the expressions on his face communicated volumes about his character.
shareNice try, Simon.
