I see Lucasfilm are taking lessons from Ghostbusters(2016)

Remember that movie? No, me neither. But what I do remember is that genuine criticism of that movie that had nothing to do with "vagina", was shut down by belittling the very audience expected to turn up like good little automatons and pay their money.

Members of the cast, director and others branding the fanbase as "misognistic", "living in moms basement", "sexist" etc, etc.... all for pointing out problems in a franchise they had the temerity to love.

And now two years later, Lucasfilm are doing the exact same thing.

I wonder if they'll succeed where Ghostbusters(2016) failed?

I think we already know the answer to that one.

reply

People were freaking out about Ghostbusters from the second it was announced. Before anyone saw it, people were freaking out because it existed. It turned out to be a shitty movie, but the hate it got before it came out was ridiculous.

There was a ton of racism and sexism aimed at the cast. Leslie Jones was targeted on Twitter and some famous people encouraged others to join in and attack her. You cant just pretend that didnt happen to make a point.

reply

Wrong. People started "freaking out" the second the first trailer arrived. The whole point of a trailer is to judge whether or not you think the movie its advertising is worth seeing, so the excuse of "before anyone saw it" is a poor one.

And it turned out to be a shitty movie..... seems the trailer was a fair example of what was in the movie and people judged it accordingly.

As for the "ton of racism and sexism", again, wrong.

There was some racism and sexism, the majority of detractors went out of their way to say it was nothing to do with women in the cast, and were irritated that Sony fixated on the "racism and the sexism" as an advertising rally call.

Leslie Jones didn't deserve the hate, ironically the trailers made her look an utter fool but she turned out ok in the movie itself, but she has to accept blame for engaging with the trolls in the first place.

How much shit did Kate McKinnon and Kristen Wiig get? None, because they didn't engage with trolls AT ALL.

You might claim that its because they were white so got an easy time, but thats clearly not true as Melissa McCarthy was the one that came out with the "living in moms basement" tweet and got slammed hard for it.

Leslie Jones simply couldn't keep her mouth shut and ignore the trolls, and trolls love it when their targets come back for more, her agent must have been screaming at her to stop.

And if you're banging on about Milo, he did no such thing.

After all that crap, we're still left with the fact that corporations and people working for those corporations attacking the very people expected to pay for your products is a universally stupid idea, and it didn't work for Sony, and god only knows why Lucasfilm thought it would work for them.

reply

Absolutely, it was when the trailer dropped, and man was that trailer bad...

Current Lucasfilm is just absolutely clueless, they are living in a bubble which thankfully is being popped.

reply

Well over 1 million dislikes.

reply

Just took a look at that awful trailer (God why did I watch that movie?) 1m dislikes! Faith in humanity...restored.

Except Lucasfilm is not doing that.

reply

You're quite wrong on that. Kathleen Kennedy IS Lucasfilm, Rian Johnson works for Lucasfilm.

Both have been dismissive of fans.

You were saying?

reply

They've been dismissive of fans who insult them, throw tantrums over the movies, and attack the actors over it, sure.

And really, if you're personally offended by anything Johnson or Kennedy says, you're being a little snowflake. That's just sad and pathetic. You have a really thin skin if something a director says makes you throw a tantrum and cry.

reply

That's a lovely response but meaningless bollocks.

Its a very simple equation, one i'm sure you might be able to figure out.

Don't insult your audience by telling them what they are, and then thinking that those paying customers might just decide to reply in the only way studios understand....... by not seeing the movie.

You can throw around "snowflake" and "thin skin" and "tantrum" and "cry" (you've obviously not witnessed many tantrums if this is what you think this is!), but the fact remains is, people have an invested personal interest in certain movie franchises, studios don't.

As for them being dismissive of fans who insult them, really? They need to grow the F up and either ignore them or block them, there is NO compunction to have to engage with people that insult you on Twitter.

Replying to @rianjohnson
Ever read the novelization of The Goonies? It's first-person (told from @SeanAstin's perspective), almost The Catcher in the Rye of movie novelizations.

Rian Johnson

The Ghostbusters novelization is (if memory serves) written in the present tense, which is realllly unsettling

They have never called fans misogynists or sexist simply for not liking the movies or used the the phrase :living in mom's basement."

If you think they have, a citation could easily prove me wrong.

reply

Yes I do, this is too easy:

On the Jimmy Kimmel Show when the old and new Ghostbusters cast were reunited on 11th June 2016, Melissa McCarthy had this to say

"Melissa McCarthy, who plays Abby Yates in the film, quipped back at Kimmel that β€œwhat these guys don’t say when they’re typing is that their moms are like β€˜get upstairs and take out the garbage! You’re forty five years old’”.

So, as you can't clearly see the inference, please allow me to show you, because not all things are found by doing a Google search for "living in moms basement" lol

1). Mom is shouting at their son
2). Mom is shouting at their son to take out the garbage (suggesting he still lives there)
3). Mom shouts "get upstairs"...... upstairs? Means he is in the basement.

But please, don't accept my word for it, feel free to watch the video on Youtube from The Jimmy Kimmel Show.

Here it is: https://youtu.be/TQ85g2Al1ZA

I said of Kathleen Kenndey/Lucasfilm. No one's denying the Ghostbusters crew said these things.

reply

Right, well thats what I was referring to with the "moms basement" comment that came from Ghostbusters actors.

My point about Kathleen Kennedy and other people from Lucasfilm was that they were acting in the same way as the Ghostbusters crew were (not that they said the same thing), but that they were insulting the fanbase and thinking that was in any way a great tactic to get people onboard.

They should simply have not responded if they didn't like the comments, but the history of Ghostbusters (2016) is a Movie Making 101 about how NOT to market your movie, and its no surprise others took on the comments of KK and others and decided not to see Solo.

reply

I don't see the same thing happening here with Lucasfilm.

reply

Not on the same scale no, but we're in uncharted waters where a STAR WARS movie is in danger of being a flop at the Box Office (yes it'll be profitable eventually with other revenue streams) for the first time ever.

To dismiss comments made by Kathleen Kennedy and Rian Johnson as not being at all contributory to the situation Solo finds itself in seems rather premature.

There are lots of factors for Solos failure, the comments were certainly one of them.

reply

The difference is Ghostbusters sucked...Solo is a good film...

reply

The other difference is that the makers of Ghostbusters actually called fans who didn't like it mysoginists and basement dwellers.

No one at Lucasfilm has done that.

reply

Well I don't know if he counts as 'Lucasflim' but the author of the Disney Star Wars book series is known for his insane ranting:

http://boundingintocomics.com/2018/06/06/star-wars-author-chuck-wendig-breaks-down-after-calling-star-wars-fans-white-supremacists/

reply

Yeah, he's a moron. I heard his books aren't that good either. I never read the Aftermath series after the reviews of the first book were mediocre. This dude's ranting has made me have no desire to read his contributions.

But I'm talking about Kennedy/Abrams/Johnson and people involved in the movies. People spread around rumors of these peeps saying things they never actually said, mostly because they don't read past sensationalized clickbait headlines.

reply

I read a review of his book and the one line extract was enough to make me want to puke in my own mouth it was so poorly written:

"The TIE wibbles and wobbles through the air, careening drunkenly across the Myrrann rooftops - it zigzags herkily-jerkily out of sight."

Plus he wrote them in the present tense - no doubt trying to be wacky.

reply

And now "Ocean's Eight". Fyi to Hollywood: the problem isn't an "all female cast"; it's your pathetic, warmed-over rehash.

"Bridesmaids" was funny as hell but I would have zero interest in seeing "Groomsmen" if 90% of the movie's selling point was the sex of the main characters.

reply

Hi Texas! How's it going?

Bridesmaids is basically The Hangover, but for girls... mostly πŸ˜‰

The clever part, is that they didn't try to piggyback on the brand name, but rather tried to figure out what it was about that film that resonated with it's audience and they took the concept to another setting... Even if it had failed, it would have done so on it's own merits, not as a result of bad press from hurt fans and "influencers".... But it was a towering success anyway (funny movie)... πŸ‘

The Ocean's Eight movie could work if they break down the concept and build it from there, but I think they will be lazy and simply rely on the brand name and hide behind troll blaiming if it doesn't perform (classic corporate exec cover-your-ass move).... we'll see when the movie is released... I'm not confident that it'll work as well as a movie given that there is no soderbergh and I wonder if they'll capture the spirit of the Oceans movies which I think the first Cloony one did for the most part... The trailer for Oceans Eight looks like a very average movie... But one cannot judge the quality of a movie just on the trailer, so I'll reserve judgement...

You raise an important point about rehash movies, but I wonder if many disgruntled fans agree with you (us) on this criticism... For example calls for 'fan service' are very loud online as I've noticed, for example, in the Alien series of movies...

I think the fanbase needs to be a little less precious about this, or alternativaly, simply resist any further movies in a series or any expansion of the concept... One cannot have the new without some change...

Hey Gfl!

How's that Amiga working out for you?

Good to see you around again, thought you'd popped it.

Catch you on the Covenant 2 boards when they get around to existing! [winkgrin]

reply

Aloha :)

It was hard to know which board had taken over from IMDB, and after a break, I found out that this is as good as any place to come to, so, here I am.

I'm releasing Starquake for Amiga in about just under a month, so thats something I suppose.

reply

I've been here for about a year now and it really is a decent substitute for IMDb. It's not got the traffic yet but it's getting more everyday.

Captain Blood is where it is at for good space games 😎

reply

Shaming people isn't going to get people to go to a movie. You might shut down some criticism that way, but when it comes to whether or not your average movie goer decides to pay to see your film, they're probably going to be less likely.
