Why did they build the big bonfire?

They gathered up and burned a bunch of the logs. Why? I don't think they thought the fire'd be seen by anyone. What don't I understand? Thanks.

I thought the same thing. They could have built a house.

I think it was just to get rid of all the dead trees after the tsunami. I suppose they wouldn't be good for building because they were rotten.
