Almost walked out

Yes this movie has impressive animation, a couple of good songs and the voice acting is spot on. Unfortunately all of the above are pros that are evident mostly to adults, but my six year old niece (as well as most of the children in the theater) was bored to tears, to the point that we almost walked out of it. It took me a lot to convince her to stay till the end.

The movie might be charming, but with only three action scenes it certainly isn't entertaining. The story has a very simple plot and it feels over stretched even for a 100+ min length.

Don't get me wrong, I believe that without kids (or maybe with more "art sensitive" kids) the movie experience would've been different, but if you're a parent and expect to have your kids' eyes glued to the screen, you might be disappointed.

They didn't like the songs?
I can understand though. Moana's plot is closer to a spiritual experience.
Kids who were bred on Despicable Me might not be able to handle it.

You're a fn baby. 'Wah wah your kid must not be sophisticated enough for the movie I liked'. The funny thing is this movie is pretty simple-minded.

I said spiritual not sophisticated. Lol
Adults who hated Life of Pie would probably hate this too

reply

Why yes, I did hate Life of PI. But it was probably better than this simple-minded cartoon (although this was more enjoyable and I didn't finish the former).

My five year old son LOVED it. He's been talking about in non-stop and keeps asking me if Santa will bring him the movie for Christmas.

reply

Took a younger family member to see the movie and the exact opposite happened. She loved it.

Sounds like you had a bunch of kids who aren't used to watching something that isn't straight up slapstick, ala minions. I saw it in a sold out theatre and the children, including my niece, all seemed to love it.

reply

Same here. My 6 and 4 year old enjoyed it immensely. Although my four year old was a little shaken by the climax. It was even given a rousing ovation by the theatre goers. That was nice to see.

Yep...there are certain kids that love a movie like this and there are others that can only focus on movies like Minions or Trolls .

My 3 year old and 7 year old loved it

Please, enlighten us on what you and your niece consider "great" cinema.

All the kids in the theatre? How do you know how all of the other kids were feeling?

reply

How? 'Cause they couldn't stay in their freakin' seats trough the movie, that's how. And I never said ALL of them.

He heard crying in the emotional moment, so decided that most of the kids in the theater were bored to tears.

My 3 cats loved it, i got to see a copy on the internet they even sang along with Maona..... great movie...

I'm afraid this may be far more a commentary on the personality and parenting of your niece than on the quality of the movie. I watched it this afternoon, and when it was over my six year old son happily declared that it was the best movie he has ever seen, better even than Zootopia and Kubo and the Two Strings (both masterpieces in their own right).

The critical consensus is nearly 100% positive, it's also been beloved by every kid and adult I've talked to about it.

reply

Well yes, I have to say that my niece and nephew are quite hyperactive and even when they enjoyed Zootopia, this probably wasn't their "cup of tea".

However, that doesn't change what I said about the movie. The first act takes a good chunk of the running time and the rest of the movie is just Moana and Maui arguing in the middle of the ocean, with only three action sequences.

I can picture myself as a kid and wondering what's so great about this movie. Can't you?

How dare the setup for the movie take up a little time?! How dare they focus on character development and the relationship between Moana and Maui?! They should have just had all action!

Seriously, you went to a Disney animated musical expecting an action movie? That says a whoooole lot more about you than about the movie.
