The masses seem to love the dumbed down, cheap crap Illumination puts out. This isn't a surprise to me as I've been warning of this outcome since last summer.
Where on earth are you getting the idea that Moana's trailers were awful? On YouTube, the official trailer for Moana has acquired 19mil hits over three months. Zootopia's most popular trailer according to YouTube has acquired just 20mil hits over the period of 1 year. So I wouldn't say Moana's marketing was awful. Clearly people are either being linked to her media through other venues, or they are actively searching for it which shows interest.
Sing is very light reality show fare, so it doesn't shock me more people are seeing it.

Sing is your typical talking animal caca that people love way way way too much, and studios love to pump out way, way, way too much, which is why I avoided it. Moana, I'm seeing because this is a Disney movie with a princess of color in it-a very rare thing to see from this company, and one that you can count on the fingers of one hand.

Not really that rare. Disney has 7 white princesses, and 5 non-white. Not really that much of a minority...

Sing Standees were everywhere a month before it came out. Sing had a ton more trailer time than Moana did as well. Then there were all the tv spots not to mention that idiotic Christmas advert featuring Sinh characters.
The campaign was just incessant. I was talking to a group of friends after Hidden Figures about how great Moana was. Most had never heard of it. And I was floored.
Maybe the release was smarter? Seems like Sing will end up with $270-280 million in USA and I guess $670-680 million worldwide? Moana is looking for a USA total of $250 million and a worldwide total above $600 million. It isn't a big difference anyway, and as both films will end up being hits, I don't see anything wrong with the one making more money than the other...
I would agree it is at least somewhat related to marketing. I believe I saw a grand total of 2 trailers for Moana, both during Disney movies, and 0 TV spots. I saw a few trailers for Sing, not too many more than Moana, but TV spots and "sponsorships" of certain shows galore. I can't tell you how many Sing sneak peeks I fast forwarded through (and a few my wife made me watch, as she wanted to see the movie) during some of the TV shows I had recorded. In the end, my wife and I did end up going to see Sing (as she really wanted to go), and it was a decent movie. Better than SLoP, but not anywhere near as good as Moana or the one Illumination movie I really loved, which was the first Despicable Me.
She liked it quite a bit. She also liked Moana. I don't know which she liked more, as I didn't think to ask her. But she also was more defensive of Sing, because she knew I didn't really want to go see it. I will clarify that I was pleasantly surprised by Sing. It wasn't bad. I'd give it like a 7.5-8. But I would give Moana a 10, so it's quite easy to see which one I preferred.
That's the idea of ranking that Sing looks on the theatrical promotional material. Nice honest CGI movie with nicely written plotline and characters, but nothing exceptional.
In France they will use some french show-business star to dub it, like the Mezzo-Soprano Cecilia Bartoli to dub Rosita the sow, and the too famous 80's teenagers's singer Patrick Bruel to dub the Koala.
It would seem so, sadly. I hope Moana could get Best Original Song but then there are the two La La Land songs... another movie that I enjoy. It's a tough call.
One theory I have is that Sing was more unisex. I can see young boys thinking Moana is a cootie filled girl movie.
This right here. Sing appeals to all demographics. Moana as a princess movie is mainly for girls and unless a princess movies becomes a phenomenon like Frozen it won't be able to compete against something like Sing with wider demographic appeal.

This is a key thing to remember. Already, Moana is the third highest grossing princess musical from WDAS, behind Frozen (duh) and Tangled.
