I saw it yesterday on a regular screen - no IMAX and no 3D.
The film was wonderful. I was enthralled from start to finish. I have always lived in New York City and I remember the actual event very well - I was 23 at the time. Also - I have met Philippe Petit, and I too am a street performer (among other things). I met him while I was doing my own thing outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art on 5th Avenue - playing the classical guitar.
I have never seen a movie in 3D where I thought the movie was improved in the slightest by the effect.
I dislike the glasses and the loss of clarity that they cause.
I dislike being poked in the eye repeatedly by objects coming out of the screen at me. Rather than putting me IN the movie, what it does is take me OUT. I get that they have this method to make the picture look like it has depth. The problem is that focusing on this effect makes the movie itself lose some depth.
A movie is only a great movie if it does something to me emotionally. The 3D effect does absolutely nothing to improve the movie experience for me. Asking if the 3D effect improves the movie is like asking if pictures would improve Hamlet.
Now I'll wait to be called an idiot, or to suffer whatever slings and arrows you want to shoot at me.
