Incredibly overlooked. One of QT's finest works.

I'll admit; I saw this movie in theaters and found it pretentious, annoying, and boring, though I did like the film's visual style and character performances. Stuff like QT himself coming out to narrate the movie made me laugh out loud in the cinema! At the time, I ranked it last with Death Proof as QT's weakest film. However, over the years I've rewatched it more and more and with each viewing I have grown to appreciate it a bit more. Now, years later, I can honestly say that I adore this film and that it's probably my 3rd favorite QT film behind Pulp and Basterds.

Every actor gives an award-worthy performance. Samuel L Jackson delivers the single best performance of his entire career. The cinematography, music, editing, set design, and of course QT's writing and directing are all absolutely top knotch. Also, I'm a huge fan of The Thing (1982) so seeing multiple references to that movie is also a plus. If you were like me and didn't care much for it at first, I'd give it another chance.

It's a beautifully shot film. I still find the plot line tedious and too heavily "inspired" by older iconic movies that QT drew from. But I recommend it just so younger audiences can appreciate a movie that was actually shot on "film" and not digitized to death like 90% of Hollywood's leading movie releases.

reply

It isn't "overlooked", it had massive spotlight like all Tarantino movies these days and was for the most part well received by critics and audiences.
However it simply doesn't appeal to everyone, it is more a stage play.

I liked it but it is not one of the Tarantino movies I could rewatch endlessly.

"Context is king": It's generally overlooked in Tarantino's oeuvre. I place it somewhere around his fourth or fifth best...

Pulp Fiction
Django Unchained
Inglourious Basterds
Jackie Brown / The Hateful Eight / Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood

i don't think it's as bad as people think.
also it should be watched WITH the intermission. ..

Why do people do this? You like a terrible movie and want to convince others to find the same charm you did to. Why? Do you need to validate your taste or something? I think Freddy Got Fingered is one of the funniest movies ever and I dont give a shit if people bad mouth it or not and I dont need a bunch of people appreciating it or agreeing with me. Who gives a shit?

Ohhh if you read the book, you'll like it better
Oh you just dont get it. It's way too meta, go watch transformers
You need to watch in the theaters to get the full effect and really appreciate it
You had to be there to understand, this was cool at the time
It's a character piece, you really need to focus on the acting, ignore the plot
The visuals were spectacular. I really like the lens and filters being used in that BJ rape scene

No fucko. A good movie doesnt need any of that.

so is this how you get your kicks? by attacking randos on the internet? i just came off of four message boards where i saw you avoiding the question and just being a dick, and now you are doing it to my post! and the hateful eight is nowhere near terrible you stupid fuck. wow, it's almost like people came to this discussion board to discuss movies! what a novel fucking concept that clearly flew over your mongoloid skull. "NGMI", what does that stand for, "nobody gave me infatuation", "never given most importance"?

and freddy got fingered is a funny movie so who gives a fuck

reply

if you dont know what NGMI means well you're not gonna make it in this business kid. I am discussing this shitty movie. Sorry that you thought this board was a safe space for only fans to fawn over it's garbage plot, cheesy dialog, and stupid characters. Go find a corner to circle jerk the 70mm film aspects, while the big boys discuss real movie aspects.

reply

Why are you such a douchebag?

reply

Lol, why do you come to a message board and try and convince people a great movie isn't good?

reply

I wasn't blown away, but I enjoyed this movie when I first saw it.

The mini-series was awesome though. The format works so much better for the material. Most of the movie is dialog and Tarantino shines in that area, but the film is almost three hours long. Splitting it up into Episodes made it easier to digest which allowed the dialog to take center stage without fault. Also, Kurt Russell's out-of-place narration was removed, which I felt was an improvement.

I’m a big QT fan and I saw Hateful Eight in the theater when it came out and was seriously underwhelmed. I’m a huge fan of The Great Silence, The Thing, Morricone, Russell and the rest of the list that should make The Hateful 8 great. But still I place it last on my list of his films.

I do plan on giving it another shot this week and I hope I change my mind.

I agree, although I knew it right away! It immediately launched to the top of my list of favorite QT films...
