comparison to original
It's it me or was Broadchurch better?
shareBroadchurch was way way way much better, Gracepoint was ok but there was no point in making it as the ending was quite the same, just added a bit more but i wish they had come up with a much different ending.
shareBoth versions were good. But Broadchurch was my favorite. It's like watching a play. You see it again, with different actors and different interpretations in performance.
My issues with Gracepoint were the parts where they modified things thinking it would be more appealing to American audience (for what it's worth, we Americans do it to ourselves). For example, Olivia Coleman's Ellie Miller was very much Alec Hardy's equal. She might not have had his experience, but she was definitely a good detective and deserve the promotion that Alec got. Poor Anna Gunn (whom I actually like) was stuck playing an American version of Ellie Miller. She clearly wasn't Emmett Carver's equal. Emmett sorta dragged her around while he solved the case. Again I'm not blaming Anna Gunn here. I just don't think The Powers That Be assumed that we would accept anything stronger than the Ellie we got.
And sadly, I find this to be true of most remakes of foreign television. The things that made the original so brilliant was that the shows aren't afraid to go slow or to let things unfold naturally. So with American remakes, we end up with a bunch of tv-trope characters that can easily be identified.
So, while I was slightly disappointed with little bits here and there, I did actually really like Gracepoint and am really disappointed that they won't give it a second season. At least there's still Broadchurch (Series 2 & 3) to look forward to.
It's interesting. I can see your point from the view that Olivia's Ellie was never afraid to tell Hardy off or lob an insult when she disagreed with him, whereas Anna's Ellie respectfully disagreed but remained subservient.
On the other hand, I think Olivia's Ellie was less confident, much more the over-sharing small town girl who wanted everyone to like her. Anna's Ellie was bristly with Carver and less vulnerable. That made a dilemma for Tennant I think because as Carver, he had to stay tougher than Ellie so he became much harsher than he'd been as Hardy and couldn't show much range in his personality. For those in the American audience who'd never seen David Tennant in other work, I don't think that was a great introduction to his talents.
Perhaps if they'd switched the two leads so he played "Elliott Miller" the small-town more vulnerable detective and made Anna Gunn a female "Alex Hardy", it would have worked a little better and been a better showcase for David. It also would have been an interesting twist to flip the inappropriate relationship to one between Tennant's character's wife and Danny.
I watched both Broadchurch & Gracepoint because I loved David Tennant ever since I saw him as the 10th Doctor on Doctor Who. Both Broadchurch & Gracepoint were great shows in their own rights. I think Broadchurch is the better show.
If it's all the same to you, I'll have that drink now.-Loki (Marvel's Avengers)

Broadchurch is, by far, better than Gracepoint. The cast is excelent, Tennant is a different DI and Olivia Colman is superb as Ellie Miller. I've just watched season 1 and in my opinion, this is the best drama series I've seen so far. BBC is producing excellent series.
shareAll three seasons of "Broadchurch" are excellent. I've only seen part of "Gracepoint", but so far it just seems like a weaker, pointless, shot-for-shot remake of season 1 of "Broadchurch" with less interesting actors (with the exception of David Tennant).
