Do Americans understand this?

You would be surprised how many Americans between New York and LA not only understand this drama but who actually love it. I've had the pleasure of chatting with plenty of folks Stateside who've taken this show to their hearts. They also appear to love Wainwright's other epice drama, Last Tango in Halifax.

My NY sister in law has no problem with it, and I heard an American woman recommend Happy Valley as her favourite on her podcast (Real Crime Profile).

I had to stop driving while listening to this on NPR because it took right back to being there for my first intervention. Most intense 25 minutes of my life.

Seattle here. It's easy for me to understand. But then I have been enjoying British and Irish TV programs for many years.

From Canada here, can understand everything in the first two seasons. My dad though has trouble hearing what the main character and that teacher say sometimes though.

My sister and I love the show, We're from Melbourne, Australia. After 20 to 30 seconds we pick up the accent quite easily. Absolutely brilliant, Fantastically acted and extremely powerful. Hope for season 3.

I've watched most, if not all, of Wainwright's dramas. I first noticed her work in "At Home With the Braithwaites." That show was truly unique, and is the most balanced dramedy I've ever seen. Most comedy-dramas end up being too much of one or the other.
"Last Tango" didn't really do it for me. I LOVED the cast, but it became a silly soap opera.
I'm waiting for her tired old plot point to show up in "Happy Valley" someday. In three other shows, she's written about a character having a full-term baby die in utero.
