Florence Pugh -- Husky-voiced 12 year old

I really like the movie, and the whole cast in general. However, I'm puzzled about the casting of Florence Pugh as Amy. She was too old to play young Amy and her husky voice as a 12 year-old sounded ridiculous. Why was she cast in this film?

And even with that handicap, she was the best actress in the movie, way above Emma Watson.

Interesting. I couldn’t disagree more.

Flo Pugh was miscast and she was far from the best actress in the movie. I would rate the girls this way:

Eliza Scanlen - at times she took my breath away
Emma Watson - a small part but well played
Saoirse Ronan - she was trying too hard for an Oscar as was the film
Flo Pugh - she was behind the eight ball from the start because she was miscast
Timothee Chalamet - hopelessly miscast

All the raves of this movie were for Pugh and Ronan, especially Pugh, so you are clearly in the minority.

I would even say that Emma Watson did a very impressive job in being so mediocre in such a role, in a movie with a lot of critical and awards buzz.

I really liked Eliza Scanlen in this - she was very good in the scenes with their old neighbour. Emma Watson I found a bit disappointing in the cinema but liked her better watching again on TV - could be several reasons why. Saoirse Ronan didn't dominate the way I expected her to. But I actually thought Florence Pugh was the best there - especially in the second half of the film, and Chalamet seemed pretty good too - much better than I expected.
But really I think a lot of the credit goes to Greta Gerwig - she made sure all the sisters had room for their role and it wasn't all about Jo, which is the way it often seems.

Agreed 100% that Pugh steals the film, although I really liked Saoirse in this more then you do. I thought the film was at it's very best when dealing with Laurie and Amy falling in love and when Pugh is adult Amy, her acting in those scenes is fantastic. Especially that scene in the park when she thinks Laurie is playing with her feelings and only accepting her cause Jo didn't. I like that she made her adult Amy far more likeable then past versions, where I feel Amy isn't given much.

Even Emma Waston is pretty good in this, I don't rate her much as a actress. Eliza Scanlen (check out Sharp Objects, her best performance to date imo) doesn't steal the film or anything but she puts a ton of heart into a role in a lesser actress hands could have faded into the background.

Timothee Chalamet is born to play roles like this. Probably delivered one of his better performances for me.

I think one thing 1994 version did right was hire a of age actress for early years of Amy. Pugh still delivered a excellent performance even though I didn't buy her as a 12 year old.
