Can we say that this is a modern horror classic?

As in that we will look back at this movie as a standout decades from now like we do other classics?

I think so, it already has a cult following that will ensure it's longevity.

Yes.

Almost certainly. It's among the best horror films of the past decade, and I can think of nothing about it that will diminish its impact over time. Intelligent, genuinely scary horror films like this one are very, very rare.

I have to add that it's definitely on the short list of greatest horror films of the 21st century at this point in time, and absolutely a classic.

Of course it'll be considered a classic. It's one of the premium Horror films of the 2010s.

Insidious, Sinister, The Cabin in the Woods, The Conjuring, The Babadook, It Follows, The Witch, Don't Breathe, 10 Cloverfield Lane, It, Get Out, A Quiet Place, Hereditary, Midsommar, The Lighthouse, Us.

I probably missed some, but those films are going down as the defining films of the decade whether people like it or not. They're certified classics for future generations. It Follows is a guranteed top 15 Horror film for it's decade (for me it's a podium finisher), that's enough to ensure classic status.

Some people may say there are 'hidden gems' that are superior to some of the films I listed. That may well be the case but you need to understand 'classics' often need to be seen, to make a mark, to have a fandom. Some stellar films are forgotten about unfortunately. You don't become a 'classic' for being a good film, you need to be something of a hit.

In 20 years kids won't be talking about your bumfuck indie horror film that currently has 5k ratings on IMDB with an average score of 5.8

Years ago some films could be a bit of a flop only to become a VHS hit and slowly develop 'cult classic' status pushing into legitimate classic status. That seems increasingly less common these days with VOD digital and the sheer proliferation of content and it's consumption. When's the last time a film flopped only to rise from the ashes as a certifiably beloved film?

For the record 'classics' are often overrated. It Follows bodies many celebrated Horror films from the 70s and 80s. So people getting pissy and stingy about delegating the term out need to give their heads a wobble.
