with the same characters. And remarkably, the CGI is far worse this season than on SyFy.
I think it was a big mistake to make Cibola Burn into one 10-episode season. It was the worst book, while they made far better books into 6 episodes. In fact, I think it might have been a good idea to largely skip Cibola Burn entirely.
I like Orville as well. Obviously for different reasons.
This season was a bit More dinamic, didn’t feel bored at all, while with the first 2 it happened once or twice.
While still maintaining the story, characters, politics at a pretty high level.
The only 2 things I didn’t like: Lucia gets to live and “corporations are bad, mkay? And working class are good, mkay?”
"The only 2 things I didn’t like: Lucia gets to live and “corporations are bad, mkay? And working class are good, mkay?”"
Agreed that letting Lucia off the hook for what she did was taking the easy way out, but I didn't get the sense that the show was preaching a class warfare thing. The season ends with RCE cooperating with the settlers, emphasizing that Murtry was just following his own agenda.
They kinda made the terrorist look like a hero. And all the belter's problems/attacks seemed to be justified.
Plus: on ilus: the corporate guys were portraited as bad for not wanting to share their resources but the refugees were entitled to theirs (like the mined mineral).
The show is based on class warfare ... but imho it went too far now.
or maybe i'm just sensitive about this kind of things.
Really? The CGI this season was just as good if not better. You're crazy for wanting to skip CB entirely. A) I think it's one of the best books, and B) It closes Miller's character arc while setting up Elvi's and introducing the "bullet". How could you skip that stuff?
Yep, it really felt like a different show! And not for the better, unfortunately.
Much more melodramatic. At times boring with all the relationships, family this or that. Even Amos entangled in it! Also, most of the season seemed to be filler(ish) with slow-moving local plotlines. The settler belters vs terran corporate bad guys plotline (which I guess was the main one) was not very good, with a cardboard cut caricature bad guy and the mentioned interpersonal drama ruining it. It got ok in the last two episodes with some more action, but by then it was too late.
Also was sick and tired of the whole election-campaign storyline in the end. Loved the character of Avasarala in the earlier seasons, but here she just comes across weak, stupid and greedy for power, no matter what.
All in all it was many character actions and happenings that didn't ring true this season, something that separates this one strongly from the first three. Also the scope of the story seemed to go from galactical to just local planet stuff.
I kept waiting to see the point of the horribly boring election campaign, figuring it must somehow tie in with the rest of the season. As far as i could tell, it was not just boring but completely useless.
My guess is it ties into next season. Avasarala was not a character in the first book (at all, I think), but they chose to have her in the first season and begin her story then. I wonder if the same thing happened in season 4. She wasn't in the 4th book (Neither was Bobby. Drummer & Ashford are composite characters, but their story wasn't in the book, either.) I haven't read the 5th book, but the 4th book was just about the new planet. I'm wondering if some of those other stories are actually from book 5.
It does feel different. As well it should given that we're doing something totally different now, story wise. I didn't entirely like Expanse before, and I don't entirely like it now. But I am finding this season to be a bit more entertaining and easy to follow. I've never read the books and still find the story at large a real head scratcher.
I wouldn't say the CGI is worse, but there's definitely a lot less of it.
