So is it good?
I had been looking forward to this movie for very long and was pissed when it got delayed. Now it's finally out, but is getting mixed reviews.
I dunno... Do you recommend it on some level?

it's been the year of average/bad horror movies (Lights Out, Cell, The Boy, The Forest, The Other Side Of The door)
but this takes the cake as the worst so far
so many movies, so little time
Funny because I've heard several people say it's been a good year for horror.
shareThis movie is far better than The Boy. Yikes...
sharei just watched the movie and i liked it very much. it's more or less what i had hope MIDNIGHT SPECIAL would be more like. i highly recommend this movie.
shareEveryone on this thread keeps discussing Oculus and I agree with those that thought it was a weak film and thus overrated. Oculus came after another highly reviewed film, his first Absentia, which I kind of hated. But I absolutely loved Hush which I think is still on Netflix as I write this. Just a terrific film.
I really like this film a lot, as well. Very different from his other work and more a fantasy, but I was moved by it and found it quite original and well done. I like Bosworth as well. She is far from a great actress, but I always feel she is competent.I recommend this film and Hush. This is the first film of his with weak overall reviews, but it is easily my second favorite in his work.
He is doing the sequel to Ouija. I did not want to waste my time with the first, but the trailer for Ouija 2 that I just saw played in front of the fantastic, "Don't Breathe", looked really really good. I think Flanagan is improving overall of late.
I personally loved it. There are some parts that made me jump, others that genuinely left me feeling like I needed to check over my shoulder, and many moments that were gut-wrenching. It is[i]mainly a psychological thriller with elements of horror.
I freaking loved the ending. For me, I didn't see it coming. The revelation was executed well; it was also beautiful, haunting, and poignant.
The pacing is just right. It's not slow enough to be considered a "slow burn." However, the pacing isn't too fast either. There was a nice equilibrium there.
The characters had depth. It was easy to like and sympathize with them. In horror movies, I typically find the children at the center of the plot annoying. This character was so genuine and sweet. Mild-mannered. Very likable. I work with foster children, so I found myself adoring the little boy.
The ratings for this movie are far too low. It should easily be a 7 or close to a 7. I would rank it up there with [i]The Babadook.
I really liked it, 8/10 from me.
shareI'm shocked that so many ppl disliked this. There were a few things I didn't like about Kate Bosworth's character, but on the whole, this was a blast. Nice pacing. Nice lore. Fantastic ending. It certainly borrowed a few beats from other things but it made it its own.
Definitely cemented my interest in Flanagan's work.
