Did Monroe love Minnie? Or was he just using her?
Really enjoyed the film. Just wondering, was Monroe just using Minnie or did he actually start to love her?
shareReally enjoyed the film. Just wondering, was Monroe just using Minnie or did he actually start to love her?
shareAccording to everything Alex has said in interviews,Monroe really fell in love with Minnie. At least he thinks he's in love with her. I think he's more in love with the idea of Minnie. There relationship feeds his need to feel forever young and allows him to continue to ignore the fact that he's a middle age man who needs to finally grow up. Through Minnie he attempts to cling to his youth and the feeling he gets when he's with her is what he's in love with,
When he tells Minnie he loves her and needs her needs her during their shared LSD trip,he is desperate and his need is more as a child than a grown man as he curls up on her lap and then later when he's in the shower ,he starts making plans about how they will just have to wait until she is 18 and then get married,Minnie realizes when he exposes his vulnerability to her that he is the one with the need and she's just 15 with whole life in front of her. She's not prepared to take care of anyone the way Monroe expects her take care of him and his be feelings of love. She doesn't want Monroe anymore like she thought she did because she's ready to move on to her next step of developement like any young teenage girl would be.
At the end, Time has passed and Minnie has gained some insight and perspective. She realizes that Monroe should never have agreed to an affair with her nor should he have fallen in love with her, making plans for a future with her before she's had a chance to grow up and know her own mind. Monroe is not an out and out villain but he is very flawed individual selfish, weak and self indulgent. He is emotionally stunted and acts more like a young kid than a responsibke adult because he refuses to grow up. In that way ,he was indeed using her.
I love your assessment of Monroe and his relationship with Minnie. Very good!
Hide yo kids(from Carol). Hide yo wife (from Rick)
Great analysis. Sorry for being a bit late to the party, but I honestly think you should give Monroe a brake. I think that's how most relationships start out, with two flawed people using one another to fulfill some kind of need. It doesn't mean he didn't come to develop genuine feelings over time.
If anything Minnie was worse. She used Monroe to fulfil her need to be loved and poor self-esteem, begging and crying to him for it continually, only to callously cut him away the minute she gets what she wanted. I understand she grew up and it was time to move on, but not only did she not acknowledge Monroe's feeling enough to even say goodbye, she was thoroughly condescending towards him in the end.
I understand Monroe was older, a borderline pedophile, and and should of known better; and maybe it is just because I'm a guy, but I couldn't help feeling a bit bad for him at the end.
Having sex with a sexually mature person doesn't make you a pedophile. It's against the law if they're below the legal age, yes, but it's not pedophilia.
shareNo, having sex with a child is what makes you a paedophile. And at 15, Minnie was definitely a child

Great post Kewl Kat !!!
(At least somebody knows what they are talking about.)
According to the law they are. HE is an adult, SHE is a child. I don't care if she was the "aggressor". He was a grown man who should have known better. Her childish outbursts make it clear she's not mature enough to be making ADULT decisions.
I wonder about people like you...
I wonder about people like you...
minnie had tits and pubic hair, pedophiles don't like that sort of thing, you know, a physically matured body....
PHYSICALLY MATURED
yelled it out in bold there case someone i gonna say some dumb-ness... pedophiles like kids, children's bodies.... 15 yr old girls are usually already PHYSICALLY MATURE, you know, periods and boobies and body hair....
It's mercy, compassion and forgiveness I lack. Not rationality...
So it makes it ok that she used him to lose her virginity and is to young to carry on an emotional mature relationship with an older man. That is the problem with these relationships weather male or female. The younger person had to realize that the older person will get older before they get older and they will soon be out of touch. Younger man will start looking for younger women to procreate with and younger woman will want a younger more vibrant lover. So basically the philosophy of people is to give into your desires no matter who gets hurt in the end. That's the type of society we want to promote for our children and each other. Have fun worry about the consequences later. Many other serious things could have happend her first time having sex herpes. Now she tainted for every other partner after that gross. This is a feminists movie with an agenda. Women always fight to do what men do but men are *beep* If men are such *beep* why would you want to be a female *beep* c
shareNo, it is not okay Erskine Spencer. But he was older and should have known better. She was just a teenager. It is not reasonable to expect her to be mature.
I think he did love her, but was confused too.
Poorly Lived and Poorly Died, Poorly Buried and No One Criedshare
I think Monroe is just about the biggest loser ever.
He creeped me out every time he came on screen -- even when he wasn't diddling his girlfriend's 15-year-old daughter. Which may not be pedophilia, but it is an offense against all that is good and decent.
And against her.
And also, a crime.
I thought Monroe just said he loved Minnie because he was high on drugs
shareHe was using her. Of course, so was everyone else in this perfectly awful film using each other. They used each other like they used the drugs they used.
shareHe was definitely in love with her.
Lose the Game!!!!!!!
He was a paedophile, and he was abusing her. That he has fallen in love with the child he is abusing does not make it any better, nor does it answer for the confusion he caused her, the risks she took because of him, how he fed her drugs, and he is also responsible, along with her mother, that in her confusion she ran away, almost got lost in drugs and even prostitution. She is the victim here, this is a minor, a 15 years old girl without parental guidance, support, and love, and in her search for love and recognition she falls into the hands of a 35 years old man, the lover of her mother, who very well knows what is right and what is wrong right from the start. Good for Minnie that she is strong enough to handle all that happens to her, and comes out strong, many others might not have.
shareSorry demetgn, but you are wrong. Look it up.
Pedophiles are sexually attracted to pre-pubescent children. Legally Martin was a statutory rapist. But he was not a pedophile.
Minnie was a teenager below legal adulthood. She was not pre-pubescent.
The word everyone is looking for is 'ephebophilia'and an ephebophile is still one whether they act on it as statutory rapists.
shareThis movie isn't great, but what is INTERESTING about it is it is literally what the title suggests. It tells the story of the life a teenage girl in the 1970's without imposing adult perspective or moral judgment on the events. That is unusual and actually kind of refreshing.
Of course, some people HAVE TO impose moral judgments. But you can't hold a 15-year-old totally responsible for what she does. On the other hand, simply dismissing the older male as a "pedophile" makes the opposite mistake by removing any responsibility from the teenager. Pedophiles prey on innocent CHILDREN, not teenagers, who are 1. often physically mature and sometimes physically indistinguishable from adults, and 2. interested in sex and often sexually active already.
Of course, what "Monroe" does is irresponsible and wrong. But when I was a teenager numerous irresponsible adults helped get alcohol, cigarettes, and recreational drugs. It was morally wrong and they could have gone to jail for it, but I'm not going to play the victim and claim they forcibly shoved these substances down my throat. I think Phoebe Gloekner (the original author) would say the same thing about her early sexual experiences.
"Let be be finale of seem/ The only emperor is the Emperor of Ice Cream"
