Vs. Atomic Blonde

How do you guys find this compares to Atomic Blonde?

I'll probably watch this tonight...

reply

This was boring, trying way too hard. Atomic Blonde was a better action pic.

Yet they both have skinny waifs beating up trained male killers twice their size? Feminist brainwashing.

reply

I didn't manage to see it the other night, but will try to see it before it ends it's theatre run...

On the skinny girl thing is it very obvious? So much so that it spoils the suspention of disbelief?

The thing is, it doesn't really matter how muscular or big the women are, it's almost unheard of to have a woman overpower a full grown, trained man. Even the top female professional fighters (mostly on riods) would be killed (literally) in a fight with the average male fighter... The physical differences between the two are stark... muscle, bone density, aggressiveness, size and body control... In real life trained female cops have trouble subduing regular men, without using firearms it takes multiple women and even then they tend not to stand a chance if the man resists.

But this is a movie, fantasy, about a ballerina turned seductress killer assassin... So we kinda have to have her be sexy and for the kills thrilling as well for the movie to work as entertainment... Does it not work?

reply

It's a good film, but yes, for me it seemed as if it was following a trendy PC agenda (don't make women look foolish, but superhuman), mostly it was trying to be a sophisticated Cold war drama.

Each to their own, see what you think?

reply

I watched it... Can't remmeber any scene where she overpower's a guy... If anything she spends most of the movie getting beaten up...

Every time she hurts a guy it's a surprise attack with a weapon...

Atomic Blonde: D
Red Sparrow: B-

Smarter, more sophisticated film that never gels completely but is at least competent. Unlike Atomic Blonde which is a mess.

Some accent issues. I'd watch a sequel, I guess.

Red Sparrow: C
Atomic Blonde: D

Red Sparrow was more of a traditional spy film. I felt like I was watching an old spy film of cold war era, because of its cold, dark atmosphere without any bright color palette. It doesn’t distract with too many subplots or many characters, it’s a pretty straightforward story with a mandatory twist ending. I enjoyed the spy training school. But where it succeeds in, I think it fails on many other fronts. It doesn’t have enough to distinguish itself or bring anything new to the table in this genre. I thought it lacked a little inventiveness and suspense for one thing.

Atomic Blonde on the other hand is a much more modern action flick than a spy drama. Things move at much faster pace there and it got plenty of action. But it was such a hot mess. Theron was more like a comic book character than a spy really, and that didn’t work for me. She didn’t sell me as a spy, I thought Lawrence did it better. But I liked the soundtrack in Atomic Blonde. So there you go, it’s hard to say which one is better, it depends. They’re definitely different.

Why everyone got a problem with accents in Red Sparrow? I got no problem with that. It was fine to me.

reply

Yeah, there was never any genuine chemistry between the leads in RS. I also thought that the overall payoff was underwhelming. Not to be confused with the ultimate ending which was a pasted-on twist type end. Not great but at least seemed to try to take itself seriously. My issue with the accents is light. JL did a great job except when she didn't. When she was called on to speak in excited tones, the accent went away. Strangely, I give Jeremy Irons a complete pass for having almost no Russian accent at all through his usual mesmerizing continental accent. His performances are always fantastic. Maybe a deal with Satan?

Atomic Blonde was much as you say but I don't blame Theron. It was so poorly directed and written. They hit you over the head with the Berlin Wall coming down for no reason other than to make sure you know what era the setting is. Same with the music. Too loud and criminally overused. There is a moment in the middle of the movie that feels entirely different. Like a different production crew broke in and made the movie until the authorities stopped them. It's when Theron is escorting Terry Donovan out of the country and has that long fight scene. I enjoyed the movie for that 10 minutes. Then the regular crew wrested control of the movie back and it was more poorly edited music videos till the bad translation of an """exciting""" end.

Atomic Blonde shits all over this one.

reply

I still favor The Long Kiss Goodnight over both

reply

I had the most confusing boners after that movie. Ahhahah

Thanks for sharing.

Was looking forward to both.
Both left me deeply disappointed.

reply

Way better than Atomic Blonde, but still not perfect.

reply

They are both about female spies and takes place in Eastern Europe, but that's where the similarities end. As JohnMatrix said this one is more of a spy drama while Atomic Blonde is more of an action film, hence Red Sparrow is slower but has more depth.

reply

Both movies had good plots, but ill tilt it towards Atomic Blonde for having better aesthetics
