Not that I really care, but since they made a point to mention it in the movie, I couldn't help but wonder was there a point someone was trying to make.

shareJohn Carpenter got eviscerated by critics in 1982 for The Thing not having any females in it. Did Annihilation get the same treatment by mainstream movie critics? Nope. It's the double standards that fuel this particular complaint about this film.
shareJC is a genius to have a cast of all men in The Thing! No silly romance plot, or gratuitous sex scenes to interfere with the brilliance of the film!! Bravo JC!!
shareI actually thought the same thing. I get annoyed by how quickly men in women drop their close in dangerous situations. I liked the Alien franchise for the same reason till Alien3. People don't really do that in real life.

As far as all women? Probably some #MeToo women's boviating crap because it would have been stupid to not to have included women in other mission with men but stupid to keep sending people in after the first or second teams disappeared
I could see the writer making an all female team after watching the Fem Ghostbusters
Well the idea is that they've sent in lots of teams of men and they've all (presumably) failed, so why not try something different?
The book is much better at explaining why this might be a good idea. The film is a bit of a mess.
The bones are probably some of those teams.
