The show not having been filmed in Japan with authentic shooting locations is indeed disappointing. I just cannot look past their fake British-Columbia version of "Japan" with CGI trees in the off to make it seem "more Asian looking".
However, the acting is great, at least on behalf of the Japanese actors, minus Anna Sawai, she neither looks the part nor does she act like her character should. Way too bossy and cold, original Mariko had this irresistible warmth that made her so captivating, Sawai... well... she does not. However, I liked her better in episode 4. Who knows, maybe she'll warm up...
Sanada and the absolute unit portraying Yabushige alone make the show worth watching. Both roles people thought might be impossible to honor considering the stellar original performances from 1980.
Let's also not forget that the original has its weaknesses too, as much as I love it.
Both versions have their pros and cons I mean to say. Both are very well worth a watch in my opinion.
There's no need to restrict yourself to just one of them...
