A bit underwhelming so far

Having seen the first two episodes, I can't say I am blown away and I cannot help but compare it to the original 1980s TV show with Chamberlain that indeed impressed me.

It's difficult to put my finger on it, perhaps it is locations, pacing, dialogues/script... something just feels really off about this show. While in some scenes, they impress and I feel it is quite authentic, in others it just appears too modern in some ways.
The pacing feels rushed compared to the original too and the new Blackthorne also doesn't convince me (yet), same as the new Mariko. So far, only a few of the Japanese actors really impressed me, mostly Sanada who I think is great as Toranaga.

It seems the series just now starts to build speed, but for now, the original is better in almost every aspect, aside from the benefits of modern CGI helping with some scenes.

However, I have to make the positive note that the feared "boss girl content" so far did not happen, which is refreshing. While I do not like the new Mariko at all so far, she's not the center of the universe which the trailer kinda implied.

How do you guys like it so far?

The 2024 version is much better in the storm scenes, but they still do not match the book's description of the storm that washed the galley pilot overboard, or of his eventual rescue.

2024 Blackthorn is not as pretty as the 1980 Blackthorn, this is good.

I think most of the series characters will be far less developed than they were in the book. So far they are.

laughable series. but of course that the guy hears an insult and he immidiatly want to commit sepukku. because as we know, if the show set in fedual japan then everyone will commit sepukku for the lamest things possible. god what frikin cringe.

sepukku was not like that at all. mainly people were forced to do it by higher ranking samurai. they did not jumped to do it for the most lousy reasons. lol.

The book explains it better.

When Ishido insulted Toranaga, Usagi threatened Ishido with his sword, but did not carry through with his threat. His actions put Toranaga and all of his soldiers at risk, as they were in Osaka castle which contained 80,000 of Ishido's samurai.

Usagi requested to atone for his actions by killing himself. Toranaga refused to allow him to atone, but instead ordered Usagi and his infant son to be executed and buried in the Eta Village, as if they had never existed.

Toranaga forbid Usagi's widow to kill herself, instead she was given to Blackthorn as a consort.

I keep on waiting for the guy to show gun and all I see is swords so I am upset by the false advertising.

Oh, Millsey has a competitor now... 😊

Millsey would have said this was a plot hole. Haven't seen a post from Millsey in a while.
