This looks epic.
Does look pretty cool.

shareIt looks good but I also feel like there's something about it that feels "cold" and even a little cheap. I've never read Clavell's book but I did see the 1980 miniseries and enjoyed it, so I really hope they do this right and that it's great. I've always enjoyed stories about Japan and, if done right, this could be great, but I just hope they adapt Clavell's work faithfully without shoving in some kind of modern political message into the story.
shareI don't really think it looks cheap at all, looks like a quality production to me.
I haven't read the books or seen the previous miniseries, but the story sounds interesting. Like you, I've always liked stories about Japan so I'm definitely looking forward to this. What did you think of The Last Samurai?
The Last Samurai is pretty good. I enjoyed it even though I wouldn't say that I outright loved it.
Since you bring it up, I can say that The Last Samurai and the Shogun miniseries from the 80s--and presumably then also the book--share some definite commonalities in their story (specifically the idea of a westerner being accepted as a samurai in Japan).
I didn't think much of it when I first saw it, but after seeing it multiple times I have to say it's one the best movies Tom Cruise has made. And he's made some pretty damn good movies.
Looks watchable.
shareWhat if it has a gay character?
Not saying it will. But it might.
You're on record for openly supporting the state banning all LGBT people from being depicted in TV.
Than no.
shareShould it be banned if they depict a gay person at any point?
shareIsn't there enough gay porn for you to watch?
shareAre you suggesting that anyone who doesn't mind gay people in TV or films wants to watch gay porn, or that gay people may only exist in media if it's gay porn?
shareRead the book. Homosexuality was present, but not prominently. If this series is a better adaptation than the 1980 version, then expect to see some queer drama. Too bad if anyone doesn't like it. :)
shareBlackthorn looks too pudgy to be the malnourished survivor of a ship that ran ground in Japan.
I hope the 2024 series contains a ton more English or subtitled dialog than the 1980 series.
Considering it was filmed all in Canada with asian heritage people, I hope they just do the Red October treatment.
shareWhat is the Red October treatment?
shareFirst few minutes everyone talks in a foreign language with subtitles, so it is established they don't speak english here. But then english words sinks in until everyone speaks in fluent English. So everyone got aware that the language is only in English for us to better follow everything. It feels quite natural and not so many people ask "why does the captain of a russian ship speaks with a scottish accent".

Mariko's dialog in the novel and 1976 series was mainly in English as she was an interpreter and Blackthorne's teacher in all things Japanese.
As annoying as I find subtitle to be at times, I would hope that the Japanese cast speaks Japanese with subtitles so the audience does not get lost during the program like I did in 1980 with nearly an entire hour's worth of dialog in Japanese without subtitles.
Hearing Japanese will support the illusion that we are hearing authentic 15th century people in feudal Japan.
As said, to my info, it was filmed mostly in Canada, with only few true Japanese actors. In this case I definitely prefer them not speaking Japanese at all, because it is most likely just bad Japanese. If they had been interested in authenticity they had done the whole in Japan. It is not as Japan does not have proper movie productions which they could have partnered with. Shogun does not have many non-japanese actors.
Anyway, I personally hope it is entertaining and they start to remake the whole Asian Saga, I really would love to see new interpretations of the Struan family.
Looks like any other fantasy movie taking place in Asia.
