Is it not racist that they call the black characters 'Blackie'?

It's just one of the character's witch was his nickname not all the black character's., but that was as he was called in real life.

Gringo pretty much means whitey.....and not everywhere in the world is as hung up on what is 'racist' or not as the US of A (or these boards, for that matter)....sheesh....

There was only one of his main crew named Blackie....not like a whole bunch of 'blackies' running around :)

Yeah let's just bleach (no pun intended) real life events to cater to some imdb users stuck up sensibilities.

It's common enough to refer to any black person or person of slightly darker skin as negrito (negro=black, -ito=a diminutive that's used for pet names often in Spanish, you can just add it to the end of a regular name as well) in various South American countries. Just like calling all Asians chinos or all white people gringos. There's tons of racism in South America and all over the world, but the US sensitivities (because racism in the US is its own distinctive thing) can't control the language in other countries. Nor should they, even if it feels uncomfortable and insensitive to you. Like I don't like the way maricon/marica (or rosquete where I used to reside) is used in South America, I find it distasteful, but what can I do about it.

They don't say whitey because gringo covers white people and if I remember one of my college classes correctly it also is used for people not from that nation. And that was the guy's nick name. I don't remember more than one black person being called "blackie"

Apart from what eveyone else has said:

1) This was in the 90's. People were less sensitive about political correctness back then (I think he got his nickname in the 70's or something, when they were even less sensitive).

2) Blackie is pretty much the only black guy they hang out with, they probably refer to him as "Blackie" because it's an easy way to separate him from the others. There's no point in referring to one white guy as "whitie" if there are hundreds of other white guys around.

3) The people who call him Blackie have no qualms about murdering children. Do you think they'll feel bad for spreading racist words?

Love how an American is trying to evaluate racism in a language he doesn't know... That the word "black" (which is what negro means) is considered racist in modern times is an historical artifact from racist times. The only real reasons to consider something racist is intent and context, something you have provided nothing about here.
