Rupert Friend is not the problem.

I liked Rupert Friend in Homeland as i'm sure we all did, and I don't think he would be a horrible 47 under the correct directorial supervision. That being said this first time director has made his first B class $4.99 blu-ray in the Walmart bin, I can't believe I paid for this movie, #FML installment of his career.

These hit man movies are a slap in the face to franchise fans just like absolution was. I don't know if you can make a good hitman movie, because it is basically going to be a movie on how to kill people without anyone ever knowing you were there.

I leave you with this. In the trailer it shows 47 kick a table where his rifle bounces and shoots a bullet (because it bounces) which this bullet then hits his handcuffs and frees him. list of problems the director was to lazy to address.

1. You don't bring a loaded gun into an interrogation room. Especially not the person of interest's weapon.

2. You could beat that gun up with a hammer and it still won't fire without the trigger being pulled.

3.Let us say the gun actually does fire its 7.62 round into the metal cuffs slacked by the table and your wrist.

Things that make me to hmmmmmm.

I really do feel bad for Rupert...it's very hard to find someone that does not like him in homeland....he's so talented and it's a shame if this movie is god awful that his name will be stamped on it

reply

It'll be a cool looking, albeit stupid action movie.

Ruper isn't the problem, Hollywood is.!

I think there are too few of them, it's an awesome name. But there could be more than just Friend, Grint and Everett. I'm guessing you just don't like the older version of Robert.

I think the problem is they don't know any way to make a hitman film other than to try to make it an exciting action film about Agent 47. In my opinion the best way to make a hitman film would be to adopt the same structure as The Day of The Jackal (book and film)

By that I mean focus it on the hit rather than the character and make it suspenseful, showing 47s meticulous planning how, where and when to carry out the hit, arranging the correct weapons for the job and deciding what disguises he would need along the way whilst perhaps are racing against the clock to prevent the assassination (without knowing who 47 is). In my opinion TDOTJ still holds up in terms of suspense because it didn't focus on action, the assassin hardly killed anyone unless it was necessary and I think Hollywood should take some pointers from that on how to make a Hitman film. They seem to always want to focus it on the character rather than the job and I think that's the biggest flaw

*the authorities are racing against the clock (sorry)

The franchise needs to crawl before it can run. Creatively making a film with core Hitman game mechanics would be difficult, not only on a technical level in that making complex plotted psychological films is difficult, but also the market is smaller and less proven for those types of films.

Hitman first needs to succeed as at typical action franchise, then it can start branching out more creatively and experimentally, like the real Hitman game was when it came out.

You can't just expect a Day of the Jackal type film from coming out, few directors or writers have the skill to even copy such a film, let alone make a spiritual successor.

reply

I see your point and for most mainstream game franchises I would probably agree. But Hitman has such a core following and I would wager that group are the most likely to see the film when it's out rather than wait for a DVD/Blu-Ray release. The trouble is, they've gone for a low risk strategy by making the film a generic action film (assuming I'm right based on the trailers) when actually trying something a bit more unique that the game fans can appreciate, they may actually be able to make a successful franchise out of it, and as a fan of the games I would definitely prefer something a little closer in style to Day of the Jackal (not necessarily a spiritual successor) rather than a Bourne spin-off

Hitman last game only sold a few million, it's not a franchise like Call of Duty or World of Warcraft which have sold over a 100 million.

The inbuilt fanbase isn't large enough to support a big budget indie film destined to fail at the boxoffice. They can only go low risk and make a low budget action film. The first Hitman film only made money cause it was low budget. Probably cost less than 30 million which is very low for a action film.

Personally think the latest Hitman will be crap, but I'm watching it anyway cause it's an action film and enjoy those for the most part.

reply

With 20th Century Fox behind it don't you think they might be able to take to odd risk in order to build a sustainable franchise in the long term? Annoying the built in fan base isn't a good idea, I'm unlikely to put myself out to see it as are a number of fans. And also do you think that it would only be the fans who enjoy a hitman film that's true to the style of the games? I would say that Hollywood needs to give the viewers more credit as we don't just like action films and I think many would like to see something fresh, it's a shame that that isn't going to come from Hitman at this time, I thought it was a real chance. Still, I'll be hopeful that the trailers are completely unrepresentative of the film (not likely)

Hitman is a video game franchise and so gets little respect from movie studios hence the legion of crappy adaptations.

But yes Hitman films are mediocre cause fans go to see it anyway, the film studio doesn't have to try very hard if people will accept a crappy film, that's why the bought the Hitman brand.

Future of Hitman depends on how this film performs in comparison to it's predecessor. Here is the page for thathttp://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=hitman07.htm

It made 40 million domestic, if there is only a slight increase in the domestic take for this release then fans will have made known they are dissatisfied with these Hitman films, and the studio will make better films in the future or sell the rights. As the fanbase is supposed to grow with each film, not stay the same.

For one thing I like this actor for 47 much more than Olyphant, who although entertaining didn't fit the character as this cold blooded uberman.

Agreed. Rupert Friend will be much better than the other guy and he can definitely pull off an action role as we've seen in Homeland. However, he doesn't have the look for Agent 47...even if he shaved his head all the way.

DISPLAY thy breasts, my Julia!

reply

He's certainly a problem and a big one based on the ads. He's completely ridiculous in the role judging from the ads.

the camera will be a prob and to much action.. hitman is silent and strikes withut warning but in the event that he gets caught thre is some action but then he gerts away.... its not simple to make a film bssed on games but to easy to mess it up.. the only thung worse then that lame crazy cam is the forced storyline and weak script... plp dont get it...

Not to be defending anything BUT, it´s not the directors fault with the table thing and the gun going off... that´s just bad bad screen writing man... The director only makes the scenes that´s written for him... He can influence them, but he doesn´t make them. That´s has writers/screen writers fingerprints all over it dude :)

...There MIGHT be a small SPOILER coming if you haven´t played the Hitman games and are planning to!!:

But all in all, watching the trailer, I get the sense that the writers, producers, screen writers, and everyone attached to this movie, haven´t got a clue to what Agent 47 is about... story wise, character wise... any wise... just clueless!

In my mind (if I should make a small comparison) he´s like Jason Bourne (books or movies, don´t care wich you choose), but without the amnesia, and the fact that agent 47 was trained from childhood... but is also *beep* over by his agency, later in the games. He is basically a hitman from the day he was born... Not a *beep* hybrid human being that has armor under his skin and upgrades he can download via his *beep* Iphone... Or what ever along the lines... Not superhuman... just a hitman... and *beep* good at it.

I lost interest before the trailer was half way through and thought to myself, "This is like Silent Hill 2 (the movie).... exept it´s Agent 47 this time"

I´m a Hitman fan, played all the games, but this movie is Hitman meets Marvel and basically WILL be stupid from start to finish.
And if you ask "How can you tell, you haven´t seen the movie"... No but I know these games, and I´ve seen the trailer... That just raps it up for me. If they would have made the movie about someone else than 47, might come out good, but it seems the original scritp was either written about something else and transcribed into Hitman... or written by an absolute money hungry moron.
