7,9? The society makes me sick.

I really cannot understand why so many people hate this movie. It's unique, interesting, well-written, a true masterpiece in my eyes. I enjoyed every minute of it. I know everyone's taste differs, but I'd rate this move among the elites, would give at least a 8,4 rating. Do people just rate it down because it won Best picture and not freaking Boyhood or The imitation game?

reply

Actually, 7,9 is a pretty good rating.

I know technically it's an amazing film, but I found the script to be somewhat weak. Without the latter, no matter how beautifully filmed your movie is, it's bound to get a little weak after a while. I was really hooked for like the first 30 minutes of the movie, but then I was like "Okay, I got it already! Where is this thing going anyway?". I must say, it never got boring, but it never really exploded into something truly great.

And it's a shame really, because the film had a lot of potential. An interesting plot and good subplots, but at the end none of them went anywhere.

I gave an 8, but I wouldn't say it's a masterpiece. A very well made film, nevertheless, but no masterpiece.

Hahahahahahahaha our opinions sicken you? You need to toughen up, buddy.

Birdman is a good movie -- nothing more. People who call it original are missing the fact that the movie is a collection of theater in-jokes and cliches, some of which are hundreds of years old. There is nothing profound here, just an evening of theater made marginally cinematic. I'm glad you enjoyed it -- so did I -- but insulting people for not loving it is horribly ignorant.

No, you are wrong

I found it boring and pretentious. At the end when jumps out the window i wanted him to go splat!

That's exactly my assumption. People were so mad that "Boyhood" lost. Now, I haven't seen "Boyhood" yet, but I thought "Birdman" was ingenious and an intelligent movie.

reply

I can't imagine you would like Boyhood if you like Birdman and think it's intelligent. Boyhood is not intelligent, the story is weak. It is a movie you have probably seen 100 times already. As far as I can tell Ethan Hawke is one of the worst actors. Can this guy do one single scene wihout overacting? It is beyond me how he pulled it off in Gattaca, he was actually great in that movie.

reply

Not sure who wrote this in the review, but I totally share its point of view:

"Birdman was an injustice. it was a boring, overrated, ultimately shallow mess of a self-indulgent monstrosity that I would never watch again or recommend to anybody. Typical Hollywood self-congratulation of eccentricity for eccentricity's sake."

I specially love the "Hollywood self-congratulation" part. My idea about it is that it's a bad movie with a stellar cast. Put those actors and actresses together and film them like if they were in a reality show, you get IMHO a better movie.

I disagree very much that it is a shallow movie. It is part of a long chain of thought revolving around psychology, history, philosohy and literature. This link explains some of my thoughts:

Oh well, we are all entitled to our own opinions. To me he was just an old blockbuster super-hero star suffering hallucinations. He pretended to be a real stage actor and to prove himself and the (in)famous critic he was right he had to shoot himself in the head (if I remember correctly). And sorry, if there is a need to use Freudian or post Freudian theories to justify someone's hallucinations, the movie is shallow. There are plenty of chemicals to cure that condition. Also I can't stand freudian crap.

Honestly. after I watched this movie I thought "what was this garbage..". So I checked around. Funny enough I checked just few hours after it won the Oscar. I thought they all went crazy. And since I didn't know about it I couldn't have any prejudice either.

This movie really gave nothing to me. It didn't make me think, it didn't surprise me, I didn't feel anything for the protagonist(s) and worst of all crimes it did not entertain me. Actually it made me angry for wasting a couple of hours of my life. But again, this is my opinion.

"I can't stand freudian crap."

Ah, so you've read it and understand it? You understand The Death Instinct?

Sure, I am positive you detest all that Freud crap, Nietzche crap, Schopenhauer crap, and all that....

Do us all a favor and write like you are over 12 years old and then maybe your 'entitled opinion' will bring some value to the discussion. Don't pretend you understand something when it is obvious you don't. That's the sign of an immature mind.

I've been on imdb for over a decade and I still don't understand why people care about ratings. Who gives a *beep* Why do you need other people to approve of the movies that you like?

reply

Coincidentally smarter than average people I know think, as I do, this is 101% a masterpiece. Average and below guys think it's too pretentious, confusing, weak story / script, or boring.

So no reason to get sick about society scoring this one that low, because it's expected and normal.

10/10
