Whatever happened to the “Chosen One” prophecy introduced in the prequels that said Anakin (or possibly Luke by another interpretation) would bring balance to the Force. The sequel trilogy never expanded upon this or even confirmed if this prophecy came true or if Rey might even be the chosen one.
That prophecy was first started by Darth Plagueis, Palpatine's master. It was said that Darth Plagueis used Sith Alchemy to impregnate Shmi Skywalker to give birth to the Chosen one, someone with a high midichlorian count who would bring about the near-destruction of the Jedi order.
The Jedi were not aware that the prophecy was started by a Sith Lord, because he cleverly used intermediates to spread rumors of the prophecy around the galaxy, making sure the source of these rumors couldn't be traced back to him. He was that sneaky.
The wording used in the prophecy was badly misinterpreted by the Jedi Order. The Jedi thought that "bringing balance," meant destroying the Sith entirely and bringing peace to the galaxy. What happened was, there were hundreds of Jedi alive in the galaxy at the time of the prequels, and just a few Sith, causing the Force to be extremely out of balance. By murdering all the Jedi but a few, Anakin fulfilled the prophecy and "brought balance" by reducing the number of Jedi down to similar numbers as the Sith.
Rey's story was little more than a trilogy of shitty fanfics written by Kathleen Kennedy's lackeys to try and destroy the franchise as revenge against the "patriarchy."
It's what happens when you let a bitter misandrist, two Beta males with no real story plan, and a bunch of female hack writers get to be in charge of Star Wars. A bunch of crappy, multi-million dollar fanfics that will be de-canonized and forgotten in the next decade.
Obi Wan thought they were wrong at the end of ROTS, however Anakin did fulfill his prophecy in ROTJ and the prophecy never once said that the chosen one wouldn’t be conceived by the dark side nor did it say that the chosen one would never turn to the dark side at any point in his life.

Yes, their goal was to NOT make money. Really smart stuff here...
I hate thread like this. Star Wars was never ABOUT Anakin's redemption. There was no prophecy, no Rule of the Sith, none of that existed when the OT was made.
Why would it? Why would something never even HINTED at in the OT be mentioned in the ST? Because it was made up in the PT? What is this obsession with having the sequels reference the prequels? So you can get validation the shitty prequels exist? There's no logical progression to a character randomly mentioned something from 50 years ago when NONE of them mentioned it in the OT. Did everyone forget about it during the OT? NO, it never existed to begin with.
Cause the PT are still official films, and the prophecy was a major part of it. So it did exist, even if not originally so with the OT. And it's still consistent with the OT itself even if not hinted in the OT, so no issue there. However, it's not particularly consistent with Palpatine's revival so it makes sense to question how the prophecy may fit within what the ST established.
The sequels pretty much ignored the prequels so it was never brought up. However, nobody around really had knowledge of it other than Yoda and he was a force ghost.
Lucas did confirm that bringing balance meant destroying the Sith so Rey could very well have been the chosen one.
