Deep Impact, Rose-enhanced
A Space Shuttle crew is tasked with destroying a civilization-threatening comet on a collision course with Earth.
Mission failed; comet split into two pieces - BOTH headed for Earth.
The smaller piece strikes the Atlantic Ocean, creating mega-tsunamis that kills tens of millions.
The larger piece is four times the size of the smaller one and will impact land in Western Canada. The ejecta will blot out the Sun and kill billions.
Captain Spurgeon TANNER, mission commander; TULCHINSKY, SIMON, BAKER, AND ROSE, crewmembers.
===========================================
TANNER: If we can get the remaining bombs in that vent there shouldn't be anything left of that comet bigger than a suitcase. We can't do anything about the little one, but it might give them a chance.
SIMON: To get the nukes into the vent...
TANNER: We have to put them there.
Tanner shows them his sketch, arcs and ellipses, the Messiah going into the vent. There's a long beat.
TULCHINSKY: So, if we fail, we'll never know, and if it works, we'll never know?
Tanner nods. Another long moment. Finally:
BAKER: Look at the bright side, we'll all get-high schools named after us.
===========================================
The shuttle has flown into a breach in the comet's structure and is about to detonate the nukes that will destroy it and save billions of lives on the Earth.
BAKER: In 40 miles...25 seconds...
She keeps counting. Tanner yells back to Tulchinsky.
TANNER: Prepare to synchronize the nukes.
BAKER: ...23...22...21...20...
Tulchinsky hits the button and the nukes begin to count down in perfect unison...19...18...17...
BAKER (CONT'D): It's been a pleasure serving with you, Commander.
Suddenly the countdown stops and ROSE emerges from the back of the ship, smiling stupidly.
ROSE: I disabled the nukes.
TANNER: For the love of God, WHY????
ROSE: I saved you, dummy. That’s how we’re going to win — not fighting what we hate, saving what we love.
