I forget the name of that internet rule, that parody will eventually become too similar to its intended target to tell it apart, but it seems to apply here.

Avoiding old tropes and cliches is completely independent of quality writing. The movie is shit regardless of how "irreverent" it is.
share[deleted]
No no no, God fucking dammit, quit making excuses for that hack!
Part VII was - wait for it - a sequel to part VI, NOT part III. I think the prequels are awful but nobody on this green Earth wanted a reboot to Star Wars, the most popular film trilogy in history. It didn't need *fixing*, it didn't need *rebooting* it didn't need the past to be wiped away so it could grow...
It didn't need a sequel trilogy but if it got one it deserved one that developed the story, not one that undid it so Disney could knock out a cut n shut job, slap the Star Wars logo on it and rake in a billion or two.
All JJ had to do was to make part VII but seeing as he lacks a single original thought we got IV 2.0 and a seemingly endless supply of excuses for why this was ok.
And he fucked TLJ too by giving RJ a foundation built on quick sand. I mean, why do you think JJ didn't want to make part VIII? Do you think it was because he had no idea where the story was going, or even where it came from and all he could do was to make a near shot for shot remake of A New Hope? You mean to tell me the brains behind Mission Impossible 3 couldn't come up with an original story? That the guy who made Lost and told us all it was 'planned out from the beginning and had a clear ending' is a deeply cynical hack with a clear contempt for coherent story telling?
And by the way, I think RJ does have talent and that he made some brave choices... But in the end it almost doesn't matter as TFA was such a car crash of a movie that it broke the story. Everything now is just a joke. The only way they can save Star Wars is to tell some other story that happens to be set a long time ago in a galaxy far far away....
share[deleted]
Well in that respect we agree!
I just can not fucking stand JJA. He got to direct the *only* two sci fi film franchises in history, not through talent, but through his connections, and proceeded to rip their souls out. Taken out of context his versions of Star Trek and Star Wars are - at best - dumb but fun block busters but when viewed as a part of well loved universes they are abominations that demonstrate a total lack of understanding of the originals.
Glad to see his latest film bombing.

You kidding me? This guy insinuates I'm being racist - probably the most severe insult you can throw in this day and age and yet my reply refuting that gets deleted? Great work mods!
Is it because I called him a cunt?
[deleted]
Oh well that's different! Why didn't you just say so? You weren't calling me racist, you were just implying I was making racially prejudiced statements.
Now here's the thing, does it ever occur to you that you might just be being a little hypocritical here? I say JJA got the job because of who he knows not what he knows and you instantly try to draw a link to his ethnicity, something I never even hinted at (outside of the dark recesses of your own mind). What does that say about you? What does that say about your views and prejudices?
If someone is being racist - call them out. If they're not, don't try to play the race card, it just poisons the well.
[deleted]
No I wasn't as unlike you I don't let race inform my views of people.
And are you saying he *didn't* get the job because of his connections? What, you think he got the Star Trek job based on his artistic merits? Because of the vision he demonstrated with the likes of Mission Impossible III?
JJ's parents are/were film & TV producers. He was and is a successful producer. He is very well liked in Hollywood and very well connected. I'm sure that's got bugger all to do with his ethnicity but that is clearly how he got the job. He had no track record in similar films, he's demonstrated little artistic ability and I think he was on record saying he didn't even really like Star Trek. And you know I was mostly agreeing with you before you decided to be a race baiting pillock?
[deleted]
Ooo a whole two movies! One of which was Mission impossible III and the other being an Amblin knock off. Why that's the perfect CV for being put in charge of the two biggest Sci Fi franchises in history! And if you actually read my posts instead of trying to make snide accusations you'd see I was talking for the main part about how he got Star Trek.
Yes, he got the Star Wars job off the back of that. He ripped the soul out of ST, made an incomprehensible mess of brights lights and noise and it made money so he gets Star Wars. Guess Michael Bay was busy.
Do you know who they could have gotten to direct either one of these projects? Almost anyone. Almost any director would have given their left bollock to take on these iconic projects and instead they gave it to the guy who put 'Alias' together. Yes, he's been involved in many successful projects that made lots of money but you don't think there's another 20 directors with successful projects in the past and that also have demonstrated that rare thing known as 'talent'.
Now, Miljenko - why don't you go and use your psychic powers to combat racist intent somewhere a little more useful than an internet forum?
[deleted]
There we go!
The classic 'I'm losing the argument but want the last word' post. Surprised it took you this long.
So sorry to see you go. Good luck with the race baiting! And remember - always call everyone you disagree with a racist; how else can peace and love ever triumph?!
[deleted]
Data? So the guy who can psychically detect racism wants data now? Suddenly reals outweigh feels?
Ok, here's your data. I actually built a machine that measured the absence of talent and when I pointed it at JJA it measured 72 Giga Miljenkos! This is unprecedented, given that a single miljenko represents 1000 units of fucktard.
And I thought you were leaving?
[deleted]
Just couldn't stay away could you? The 'argument is beneath me' didn't work so now you're asking for 'data'. Well ok then.
From Wikipedia - Star Trek
. Berman approached Mission: Impossible III writers Orci and Kurtzman for ideas on the new film, and after the film had completed shooting she asked their director, Abrams, to produce it... He [Abrams] noted he only became involved with the project as producer initially because he wanted to help Orci, Kurtzman and Lindelof.[56].
On February 23, 2007, Abrams accepted Paramount's offer to direct the film, after having initially been attached to it solely as a producer. He explained that he had decided to direct the film because, after reading the script, he realized that he "would be so agonizingly envious of whoever stepped in and directed the movie.
From Star Wars
Several directors were considered, including David Fincher,[98] Brad Bird,[99] Ben Affleck and Guillermo del Toro;[100] after a suggestion by Steven Spielberg to Kennedy,[101] J. J. Abrams was named director in January 2013, with Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg as project consultants.
[deleted]
No.
Why don't you empirically prove to me he's not a hack?
[deleted]
And when I did you ignored it and moved the goal posts.
So lets reflect.
I've made my case repeatedly and provided quotes in the above. So far you have:
Made ad hominem attacks insinuating I'm a racist.
Tried the 'I'm going home but want the last word' trick.
Moved the goal posts, trying to get me to back up a claim I never made.
And in all this time you haven't made a single attempt to refute any of my claims or even defend JJA abilities... which makes me think you don't actually disagree with me. No, I think you're just a bit of a twat who wanted to pull a 'gotcha' and go for the old virtue signal, and now you're embroiled in an argument you can't win but your pride won't let you leave alone.
Either debate the substance of my claims or don't. But you're boring me now.
[deleted]
I never said you did.
I never said he wasn't.
They are facts, and they are facts I'm not disagreeing with.
I made assertions that he got the job due to connections (nice "scare quotes" by the way) and included quotes backing that up that you completely ignored because they back up my point.
You've made no attempt to reason, you're trying to 'win' by pulling the same shit every arsehole on the internet does.
You're either a troll or an idiot. Either way, I'm out, and unlike you, when I say something I stick to it. In summary - lick my balls you obnoxious twat.
Poe's Law: "an adage of Internet culture stating that, without a clear indicator of the author's intent, it is impossible to create a parody of extreme views so obviously exaggerated that it cannot be mistaken by some readers or viewers as a sincere expression of the parodied views."
share[deleted]
You're not being trolled. Christ, how I hate the misuse of that term.
shareNo, you are trolling. Coming to a board that has page after page of detailed criticism about this widely-despised film and making charges of prejudice and antisemitism while offering “Here watch this video” as your argument isn’t saying anything substantive about the film. So there is nothing to dispute.
share[deleted]
I believe that the "critics" who "acclaimed" this movie were either paid shills of Disney, or were threatened with having their livelihoods cut if they reviewed the movie negatively - they are trying to make a living, after all.
[deleted]
Star Wars is a big lucrative movie to review, a boost on one's resume, and so a movie critic would stay on a studio's good side in order to get the scoop on an exclusive early review of the movie. Of course, they'd have to say good things about it, rave about it in their actual reviews, because if they critically panned the movie or even objected to a few points about it, they would not get their commission (or it would be reduced), and what's more, any more scoops for early reviews would be denied them, so they'd lose earnings and possibly their livelihood. Basically, the studio is saying "say good stuff about our product, or you won't get any more food on the table." It really is as simple as that.
[deleted]
How do you explain the discrepancy on RottenTomatoes.com for TJA that has the critic score at +/- 95%, and the audience score at around HALF that? Clearly, the critics are the ones talking out of their asses, and maybe the audience are telling the truth?
[deleted]
The audience were TRICKED by the critics' praise, or just assumed it would be fine, and then they learnt otherwise. But Disney got their money by then. It's all a scam for bad movies to make money. Look at the Transformers crap, for example.
Didn't you know Foebane, your views don't count! Neither do the hundreds of thousands of others that didn't like the movie. No, you need to sit down, shut up and listen to your betters explain to you why this piss is rain (or Rian).
share[deleted]
You know all your posts are doing, Miljenko me old chum, is to make people who like this film come across as arrogant arseholes who are incapable of tolerating a dissenting thought.
So keep up the good work!

[deleted]
No it wasn't. It was only yesterday and the post is right there, about 30cm above this one.
I begin to fear that you are literally an imbecile. Dammit, now I feel bad for losing my temper with a moron.
[deleted]
Wow. Editing you're editing your comments in a bid to make your posts less idiotic and mine seem sinister? Did you think I wouldn't notice?
For the benefit of anybody obtuse enough to be reading this exchange I will provide a brief summary, solely so they can be informed as to the kind of poster you are.
The 'veiled antisemitical remark' Miljenko is referring to is in the above thread, and here it is again:
"He got to direct the *only* two sci fi film franchises in history, not through talent, but through his connections, and proceeded to rip their souls out".
It's not antisemitic, veiled or otherwise and they only way anyone would think it was is if they are projecting their own malignant views.
On being accused of being racist I called Miljenko a word that rhymes with punt yet begins with C, posts since deleted by mods presumably due to the use of this word.
He then claimed in the above post that I insulted him without reason
- which can be seen to be a lie simply be scrolling up a little - so he's now edited his post to remove that claim and try to make it sound like I'm trying to justify being racist. "You're trying to say that your comments that all the kittens in the world should be drowned are something to be lauded?". No. No I'm not. Neither am I am trying to justify antisemitism and I didn't say anything of the sought. I just pointed out I was accused my of being racist before I called someone a rude word (which then got the post deleted).
This user is beyond pathetic and I can't believe I wasted my time with them. I've been called all sorts on the internet but I've never had someone edit a post on me to try to make me look bad. And on what, a thread which probably only 10 people in the world are ever going to even see? If that. I feel embarrassed on your behalf Miljenko. Literally shaking my head.
[deleted]
Not denying editing your post even?
You seriously think I'm going to debate with you when I caught you doing that? So long Mijenko me ol mucker. Good luck with the race baiting, stealth editing and TLJ apologising.
I can think of no finer criticism of The Last Jedi than to think someone like you thinks it is 'near-perfect'.
[deleted]
Repeated insinuations of antisemitism based on someone using the word "connections" is trolling. Please stop. If you see a post that you believe contains hate speech, report it and let the mods deal with it.

I forget the name of that internet rule, that parody will eventually become too similar to its intended target to tell it apart, but it seems to apply here.
I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the movie so much and saddened to hear that it can't be placed in the sphere of accolade you feel the IMDb top 250 list is.
shareIf it made it to the IMDB 250 list it wouldn't be the first mediocre movie to do so...
shareI appreciate you may enjoy the film and that is your right. But on my list its at the very bottom of the released Star Wars films and I wouldn't put any of the sequels or prequels on the top 250 list
share'Not once have I read or heard a valid point made against this film'
I put this into Google translate. It gave me 'I have seen many valid points about this film however I disregard and discount them all because I don't agree with them'
About the video. Her first few points are...
"Snoke was misdirection and a clever subversion of expectation." - Nope, just badly and lazily written.
"People need a villain that is good at everything." - She said that like it's a bad thing while totally ignoring that's what Rey is on the opposite side. Also villains aren't just about being scary. They are about presence. Vader and the Emperor weren't scary per se but they had an intimidating and evil presence. Kylo has tantrums and broods and is not threatening, at all.
"Kylo is a good villain because he's emotional and unstable." - Hissy fits, brooding and tantrums.
"He's extremely strong in the force." - So strong that Rey beat him without any training or without having used a lightsaber before.
Had enough. Not wasting another 15 minutes.
[deleted]
Not saying you're predictable but just quoting myself about you...
'I have seen many valid points about this film however I disregard and discount them all because I don't agree with them'
I loved "randomly killing Snoke without any explanation of who he was is ok because Red Wedding."
shareI put this into Google translate. It gave me 'I have seen many valid points about this film however I disregard and discount them all because I don't agree with them'
it shouldn't be anywhere near the top 150 , it was an awful star wars movie, and an awful movie all together, pointless plots , stupid jokes, soulless, boring story arcs, basically took all questions that we raised in TFA and cast aside and at the end , we have no questions to ask , Rey is now overlord of the Jedi , she's a nobody that hasn't trained, doesn't have any trace of force DNA but yet she will lead us into a new age of Jedi, all thanks to Rian "im going to make a name for myself and be different and hip and cool and mess with star wars mythology" Johnson.
Kid, there is a reason why the majority of fans dislike this movie, its was fucking shit.
[deleted]
Midichlorians are NOT the Force itself.
[deleted]
I 100% agree with Lucas about the Midichlorians, they simply measure a person's Force ability: the more of them you have, the more powerful you are with the Force. As Qui-Gon Jinn says to Anakin: "Without the Midichlorians, we would have no knowledge of the Force".
The most powerful dialogue in all of the Prequels is Palpatine's speech to Anakin about Darth Plagueis the Wise, and even that is not tainted by Lucas bringing up the Midichlorians in that dialogue. I just don't get why Star Wars fans hate the Midichlorians at all, I see them, at least, as a good measure of Force ability. And as far as I'm concerned, Rey must be absolutely TEEMING with them.
[deleted]
I don't care for "mystical" and "metaphysical", the real world is not like that.
[deleted]
Seriously??
😎
I honestly think this movie has flaws but those flaws are blocking people from the good qualities this movie has. it's not perfect but it's pretty entertaining.
I'm trying to go for an entertaining, informative youtube channel so, if you have the time, take a look. Hope you enjoy what you see and if you have any thoughts or criticisms, i'd love to hear them. Thanks in advance. Review right here- https://youtu.be/nerCnafPUm8
