Why is the rebellion using fossil fuels?

The entire plot around running out of fuel is too much. They use nuclear fusion and batteries. It's to hard to watch this train wreck.

We have no idea what kind of feul they're using, for all we know they're using Unobtanium, antimatter, or dilithium crystals.
