Do people even like Star Wars anymore?

Be honest. And yes, I know they make tons of money, but so does the Trump family, and we all hate them. What I'm asking is whether Star Wars has just become a thing that happens once a year that everyone sees because that's what's expected and it's necessary if you want to be part of the conversation for the next couple of weeks. I mean, honestly...the movies just aren't good, and they haven't been good in roughly 34 years. From a storytelling perspective, it's increasingly hard to argue otherwise. Can you, deep in your heart, say that you still love Star Wars?

Ep 4-6 yes I really like. Special place in my heart forever. I admit some of that is nostalgic but there’s still lots to appreciate: Han Solo was cool, Leia was a fighting princess, Luke was the Everyman, cool ships, great music, etc etc

Just before watching force Awakens I realized these new SW films won’t be the same. Not because I’ve aged but there’s just no way any franchise can crank out so much genre defining blockbuster magic that not only makes money but becomes its own phenomena.

I’ll probably skip last Jedi. I’d have more interest in the movie if they just had new characters in a different universe and called it “space adventure”. Instead they’re leaning heavily on leftovers from the originals. Now that Han Solo is gone, Leia is gone, Vader is gone, millennium falcon is gone... what’s left? They never really had much original inspiration in these they were clearly money grabs cashing in on old favorites.

I’d wager money this will be like all the other recent blockbusters: a mad rush to cram as many pointless explosions onto the screen. Inappropriate and forced humor. Loosely connected storylines. Two dimensional characters. No charisma. No finesse. Basically, no art

Small correction: the Falcon isn’t gone 😊

But yes, I largely agree. OT will always be special. It’s lightning in a bottle, so basically can’t be equaled.

reply

Yeah I guess you’re right about the falcon. I know it showed up in TFA but thought they wouldn’t keep bringing it back. Honestly don’t remember what, if anything, happened to the falcon in TFA...

I’m a Gen X who was around in 77 for the original, and yeah, I’m still a fan. But my fandom is more about the SW universe, including the EU and the video games. The EU offers much better post-OT stories than the Disney films (eg. Zahn’s Thrawn trilogy), and the games give a sense of immersion and participation in the universe. These feel more like authentic SW to me than this Disney fan-fic

I still like it, though not as much as back in tthe 70s with the originals. I actually liked The Last Jedi. It felt like it got back to the roots of the SW phenomenon.

And no, we don't all hate Trump. I actually like him. He may be an obnoxious jerk, but he's a great president. He's repairing the damage that old Dumbo Ears did in the last eight years. And Crooked Hillary, Obama, Eric Holder, Loretta Lynch and the Deep State have been trying to sabotage him since he was elected. In my book this is tantamount to treason, and these folks belong in orange jump suits, especially Crooked Hillary.

i never really liked Star Wars... i find the better Star Wars movies are passable at best... but i also recognise that they are not made for me, they are targetted for the fans....

it seems Disney is trying to broaden the fanbase...
