I personally always thought that Wayne Brady could've played the part. He certainly has the talent: he is a good impersonator and can dance and sing. I happen to also think that he somewhat resembles a younger James Brown, at least in this video he does to me <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKCsUWx-QoA>.
I'm curious as to what the rest of you think, and who could have been cast.
I saw the trailer at the show today and from what little I saw, I thought Chadwick Boseman looked good as James Brown. I'm very excited to see this movie, I saw James Brown live a few decades ago, that man could move like no other!!! Wayne Brady would have been another choice but I cannot think of anyone else.
"I will never let you part, for you are always in my heart" MJ "turn to page 394" Snape
This guy Chadwick Boseman is too attractive for the role. I'm not knocking James Brown's looks though. He's may not have had the face of a model but he had a hard life and he damn well worked for his success from a very young age. He was a man's man and the ladies hella loved him! (lol)
How do you know he "can't act other than comedy"? Only because he has done comedy thus far doesn't mean a thing.
He is very talented, and I'm sure he is capable of some convincing dramatic roles. You are just typecasting.
I don't like it when people attempt to typecast actors (or any artist for that matter). There are a few comedians that have done some good dramatic roles. I always like seeing something different from performers, so seeing a "comedy actor" do a more dramatic role is always interesting to me.
For instance, Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. There is also Adam Sandler in Reign Over Me and Punch Drunk Love. Will Ferrell in less goofy roles in Stranger Than Fiction and Everything Must Go. Or even Leslie Nielsen who did the opposite; he went from dramatic roles to star in Airplane! (one very goofy movie)

I don't think that anyone can compare to James Brown, so it really doesn't matter who plays him in a movie. See the YouTube video "James Brown - Full T.A.M.I Show Performance, 1964" http://youtu.be/5_jqhXNF98A . He was second to last on that show, followed by The Rolling Stones. The Rolling Stones said that following James Brown was one of the biggest mistakes that they ever made. They looked pretty tame in comparison. http://youtu.be/5_jqhXNF98A
I've seen Chadwick Boseman around town. He strikes me as an egotistical c--t. I would have taken almost anyone else instead of him. Are they going to use him to portray every famous black man in a biopic now? CHADWICK BOSEMAN AS TUPAC SHAKUR BOSEMAN AS MARVIN GAYE BOSEMAN AS MICHAEL JORDAN
