Underrated pivotal entry to the franchise

Watched this again last night, with all that's happened since. This movie blended pure comic book action and imagery, with a laid back approach where you really get to know the character motivations. The AI element I think probably went over a lot of people's heads especially as it relates to the mind gem but it was pretty well handled. And importantly it set up a lot of what was to come with the MCU franchise.

It spelt out the Infinity gem plot
It established the Planet Hulk scenario
It established the Natasha/Bruce romance
It introduced Vision and Scarlett Witch
It established the conflicting motivations between Tony and Steve that would be the basis for Civil War
Gave Natasha a condensed origin story
It introduced Wakanda and how ridiculously powerful Vibranium is, setting up Black Panther
It possibly forshadowed the death of many of the Avengers in Infinity war (Tony is convinced he saw the future)
It introduced the Hulk-Buster
It more or less ended HYDRA
Set the stage for Zemo with the destruction of Sokovia but also the twin's similar motivations
It even introduced the question of what happened to the technology post-Avengers invasion that was the main plot of Spider-man Homecoming (ie how did HYDRA get the Chitauri worm)

This is possibly the most important movie plotwise and character-developmentwise in the franchise

That is also part of the problem with the movie. It was meant to serve as a bridge to all these others stories that were to come later. That's why this movie is a bit cluttered and all over the place.

I think the Russos are better at juggling multiple characters and storylines than Whedon.

I enjoyed Age of Ultron and was bored to tears by Infinity War.

I like it because Joss really does know how to do comic book characters interactions. The avengers behave how they should behave. And the action is also straigh outta the comic book

Ultron was an excellent movie, and closer to the comic book Avengers (by bringing in Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch).
And Vision was awesome.

Plus it set up Hawkeye as the soul of the team.

AoU is great fun and gets some bizarre criticisms from a few. Mainly the complaint that it's setting up further installments despite the fact that many other Marvel films do just that.

It actually spent very little time with these set-up motivations. And even if it did I don't see a problem with that. It's a franchise movie, what do you expect? Either way you look at it the film was still doing more than the first Avengers film, the plot of which consisted of- Bad guy shows up, wants to take over the world, Avengers stop him. That's it. Throw a ton of exposition dialogue to fill things up and there we go. Ergo AoU is a more involving film. Both films are fun but Avengers is overrated while AoU is underrated.

Now you mention it I just thought of another thing it sets up. Captain America weilding Thor's hammer in Endgame. This was set up in AoU when they're all competing to pick up the hammer and when CA tries it budges slightly.
