Just leave the house and let the timer go off...

Spoilers...

It should have been evident to them once they made the cameras face each other, the extent of the mirrors power in controlling them.

That should have made them deduce that their plan was not going to work as long as they were in the circle of influence, as the mirror could easily from that time onwards do what it did at the end.

So why didnt they just leave the building at that time and wait for the timer to go off. Thats all they needed to do as it was clear they were still themselves.

I mean the mirror even showed them how it would protect itself by making them stand infront of it, and they still couldnt figure it out.

Were it not for that the movie had potential.

By leaving the house do you mean "go and stand in front of the mirror until it uses you as a cushion to protect it from the anchor"? They clearly state multiple times that the mirror can overrule your decisions, the whole set up was to catch the mirror off guard and kill it in the open, if all they had to do was smash it then they could both have left the house after setting the timer.

It's likely though that whatever they thought they were doing after leaving the house would in fact just be the two of them standing in front of the mirror. this is why they keep resetting the anchor, if they did not reset it then the mirror in the last few seconds would trick them in to standing in front of it to receive the anchor blow. Just as it did with Caley, sensing that Tim would release the anchor it hid both siblings from each other and showed her something enticing while showing him something frightening and it worked. He killed his sister unintentionally.

The fact is, they were doomed the moment Kaylie brought the mirror back into their lives. They were lucky enough to escape it when they were kids, and should have left it at that. Yeah, the mirror would have gone on killing people, but it's been doing that for hundreds of years, and if there was a way to beat it someone smarter than them would have figured it out by now. As soon as she brought it back to the house and dragged Tim into her little "experiment", it had them right where it wanted them.

In fact, you could see the whole story as a metaphor for letting go of the past and not letting your childhood traumas consume you as an adult. Kaylie's desire to vindicate her father and get revenge on the thing in the mirror led them both back down the rabbit hole, and this time there was no getting out.
